Market carry and storing grain

I've had merchants try to roll grain contracts with no carry and other try to roll contracts for £1/month.
I've refused these but think the true cost is more like £4/month.
When you factor the cost to build and depreciate a store, cool grain and carry risk then there is a much bigger cost.
Are farmers lack of costing the reason they can get away with this?

To be fair my merchant offered me and extra £5/t to carry from now to early Jan, which I declined.
Better use for the shed than storing grain.
But yes in the past with others I have felt they were taking the pee.
