Go for 8220. A potentially far more reliable unit. Avoid the Funk Powershift version though. Remember this was very modern in 2003 so apart from the engine emissions rubbish they will be just as sophisticated as today's tractor spec for spec.
Personally I'd stretch to a 6490 for a far better power to weight ratio and better cab, but there's nothing wrong with a good condition 8220. The 8220 was not a common tractor around these parts and MF were only just recovering from the poor reputation they gained with the 6100 and 8100 tractors at the time, so market share in this power segment was very low [but gaining].

I have one and wouldn’t recommend it. The wheelbase is odd and gives a very uncomfortable ride and the torque curve is horrible. If you can, go for an 8240

You’ll struggle to find one I’ve looked for years ended up with a 6485 dynashift instead which seems ok but needs a bit more power I think
If you have an early one that hasn't been 'touched' then they are ridiculously underpowered at about 135 at the shaft. They can be fettled to give an easy and reliable 155 PTO hp. They share a chassis and internals with the 6490 but have a plate less in the PTO and perhaps the 4wd clutch pack. If overhauled there is no problem adding the 'missing' plates as far as I know. It could be opened up to 175 at the shaft in my opinion, but at your own risk, always.
Later ones are up at around 150 or thereabouts from the factory I think and the best ones of all are the tier3 ones with the common rail 24 valve engines. The earlier ones with rotary Bosch injector pumps have Fortius series engines while the common rail is called the Citius.
All 6485 and up tractors have Sisu [now AGCOPower] engines while the old 6220 has the Perkins 1000 series.

All early 6480 tractors have Perkins 1000 series and the tier 3 have common rail Perkins 6.6 litre engines in early production and later changed to the Sisu Citius, again of 6.6 litres, the same as the 6485/90.

Personally I would say that the 6480 is a better overall tractor than the heavy and generally underpowered 6485[unless fettled]. Far more 6480 around to choose from than the other models as well. But if really heavy implements are to be lifted, then the weight and extra strength of the 8220 or 6485 may be of advantage.

Dunno what your budget it but this is good for the money
i'll see if i can find a T2 dynashift which will be £10k less easily
but look at the low hours on this & its still fast enuff 44k max
the 40k version of the D6 box seems less trouble but i could be wrong

Id stay well clear of the model your on about there too old now. unless you buy a more powerfull model thats low hours

ha ha 50k that did make me laugh for a 10 yea old tractor...

At £50k it will have not lost much value, but compared to the price of a new tractor that power today it is something of a bargain with less than 2000 hours on the clock, don't you think?
The problem is that farm incomes have declined so much relative to the cost of inputs. That is likely to be a trend that continues to get even worse for many UK farming sectors. We are in a steeply declining industry overall.

Never mind, trees and scrub will pay the bills. Won't they? :poop:

I know it seems so wrong but it is what it is.
The lower houred one is cheap for what it is on the scale of things.
The 3451hr one is now sold they wont hang around for long

Thing by is I’ve seen some super cheap 7480 or 85 would much rather have one of them and change for a new vario?
6485 & 7485 waste of time just get the biggest end of. there much the same weight. but everything right for the extra hp
of course i would say that as a i have a 7499
bypass a 7600 thats for sure.
There will be some still about id be contacting Richard Parris myself if its something rather specific the man is after

I only looked at Robsons & Stephensons as they are on a whole well respected used tractor dealers that constantly change stock
