Measuring power line height

We have a fence to set under a power line, we are working on a steep bank an it looks like the line will be to low for us to get the knocker under.
How can we measure the height of the line?
would the power grid come and do it for us?

Use a roofing lath about £3 from builders merchants around 4.8 meters long then measure distance to the floor from the bottom of the lath

Step out how far away you need to go before the line of sight is 45 degrees. I'm sure you can knock up a set square. Sloping ground makes the job more interesting.

do not risk it, you are a long time dead!
the DNO have a responsibility to ensure the height, give them a call
At one side of the hedge the power line will be well above height however at our side on the bank it’s not, we backed up with the tractor today to set the strainer I stopped us as it looked to me like the CB Ariel was only a metre from the line!
I think I could measure it with a laser level, a protractor and triggernomitry

Alkathene pipe up the side of the pole
wear welly’s and stand on a 2 inch thick rubber mat
this will still not be recommended
phone wayleaves officer in your area and he will measure it
we had a wire below the minimum height on a hot day
they had the poles replaced and the wire 2 m higher with in a couple of weeks

I think I may be able to use a 12ft fencing rail, if I can reach it with that I think we will be doing it by hand! Only 170 metres and about half of it is under the lowest of the line

I had a line height query on our farm. I phoned Western Power who couldn't be more help full.
There was a line man out the same afternoon to measure the wires. Luckily we were ok, the lady on the phone and the lineman were quite clear that they would rather respond quickly to a query than deal with the aftermath of a wire touch and all that entails.
Please don't risk yourselves.

Measure the tractor and add a meter...

This is a repeat of the time- aged problem of measuring a standing tree. The prescribed method was said to be:
"Stand with your back to the trunk. Walk forward , pausing at intervals to view the top of the tree by bending forward and sighting it between your knees. When this is possible without falling over, you are at the same distance from the trunk as the height of the tree."
Accuracy must be determined according to the cut of your trews.

I will try that one when I’ve had it measured properly and see how far off I am!

It will be fine, the bottom wire is earth ?. Seriously though I help a utility arb company and we use insulated fibre glass poles that attach in 1m lengths to measure distance from the lines as we have to cut back vegetation to 4m.
Ring the power company they will happy to help.
