Hi all just wondered as there is rumours that on the blue and black forage harvester men woul leave the big rear belt cover off as it traps heat in and cause the belt to get hot too , fresh are is best for cooling right? Any thaughts on this thanks

If the belt is getting hot to the extent that it’s causing problems I’d be looking for a reason why the heat builds up. Slipping miss alignment worn pulleys or even a dragging jockey pulley

The powered models used a 170hp aircooled engine from memory, obviously nowadays most are hitting them with 200 + because that’s easily enough achieved now with modern farm tractors.
They are a solid machine but very old design. Treat accordingly and will be fine.

Im sure the guards are there for a reason. Better to leave it on, there's enough accidents in this industry without tempting more.
Never felt the need to take the guard off of ours.

Heat in the belt is usually caused by slippage.
Normal belt tension is 2mm gaps in the tension spring, but you can go up to 4 mm.
Above 200 - 230 horse power the belt tends to wear and then snap.
The main cause is the pulleys are worn and the belt is starting to sit in the bottom of the pulley groves , so being held up so to speak, so therefore it can’t get any more grip so gets hot.
Removing the guard won’t make much difference and is dangerous.
Remember when these machines were first made tractors were 100 horse power and both were in perfect harmony.
