Messy Triticale

This is my first crop of Agostino Triticale, and it has these plants that are considerably taller than the majority across the whole field.

Is this normal ?

Could they be a few stray seeds from a different variety. I think for commercial seed, there is a slight deviation allowed for purity.

I had that last year in my agostino I thought it was the variety Fido that I had drilled earlier and blamed my self for not cleaning the drill out properly. Perhaps it wasn't me and just a rogue variety

Don't some have more of the rye genes hence the increased stature?

Got lots of very tall barley ears poking well above rest of crop height here.dont know what admixture is allowed but must be some

Normal. Happens in other varieties, including Logo.

I think the taller plants are cereal rye, given triticale's breeding background.

I had a contract to move it and it took some diplomacy ( telling in no uncertain terms) that they had to take it.
It didn't yield as I was hoping so I have gone back to barley.

The field I'm thinking of is 2.5t/a.c. on a good year 30cwt/a.c. on a bad one.

I don't think this will do very well, on the heavier parts it looks like a poor wheat crop.
Thin and short, no competition at all for blackgrass control.

I was too last year.
It seems to me that my farm has a limit regardless of crop type,so it boils down to cost of production. For me, Barley is the way to go.

Certainly my winter barley looks really competitive, and I'm dropping that in favour of early autumn ploughing then spring barley.
Headless chicken mode at the moment regarding blackgrass.
