Vet has prescribed metacam off label for us to use on sheep, just wondering how folks administer (intra or sub)? Label say intra for cattle but sub for pigs!

Sub cut. What dosage did he advise? Speaking to one of our local vets, she said 1ml/20kg for sheep.

Careful, there are at least two different strengths of metacam - so you can’t rely on a 1ml/20kg rule unless you know the type you have. Stick to your prescribing vet’s advice.

Subcutaneous. The sheep dose is double the cattle dose. It’s licensed as that in Australia just not in the uk

In fairness to them, I think the drug company should be licensing it for sheep here and getting a correct dose rate out there officially.

The large animal stuff is a lot more concentrated. Dogs are more sensitive to nsaids than ruminants.

Well obviously dosage needs to be reduced but as far as I know it’s the same active that you get for dogs in say loxicom and around one 400th the price

That’s what I’ve always used, after several vets have said to give them 2ml.
Seems to work anyway, so I won’t be doubling up at 89p/ml!

There is a Metacam for dogs but it's different, so be sure to use the right one.

You've obviously had different advice - all I know is, when S-I-L wanted some for her lab, she was told not to use the farm version but to get the dog specific one.

I used some dog stuff on a lamb the other week. From memory it’s 1/4 strength but otherwise the same.
