MF 290 IPTO slipping.

MF 290 yard tractor on diet feeder, appears to be slipping PTO drive. Comes and goes only slips when drive is heavy.
What are probable causes, will it be just worn plates? could it be linked to oil pressure on IPTO pack? Would dirty oil filter have a bearing on it? Is there any tests I can do or is it time for surgery?

On the left hand side cover where the lever goes in there is a small test port. Can't remember the thread off hand but connect a 0 to 1000 psi gauge to this. You should get around 230 psi with the pto engaged.

Plates do not last forever, especially with diet feeders that have a high start-off torque requirement. A slipping clutch is very bad news and you should cease to use it immediately and remedy the issue, whatever that may be. The last thing you want is a transmission full of iron filings.

Things have moved on since. no PTO, no hydraulics and no spools. Pulled the filter, V fine grit in bottom of housing and filter clogged. Looks like we are going exploring some wet day. I take it I jack up rear of cab, split behind spacer, roll back axle and backend out from behind tractor, hyd lid off then pumps and PTO pack out? What should I be looking for when I am in there?

Yes, and I would say it is my fault. Sprung a leak on the oil cooler on sunday morning and bypassed it to keep going wasn't too worried about temperatures as it was -3 at the time and I kept any eye and the back of my hand on the backend for hotness.
Thing is when I bypassed the oil cooler I also bypassed the limit valve which then let the aux pump get away with less pressure? this has probably resulted in the clutch pack not getting enough pressure and then shredding itself. And there was me all chuffed that I sourced an oil cooler for an 1986 tractor this morning due to be delivered tomorrow. What is most likely to be fudged in there?

I take it the pump will be a repair kit? Will the clutch pack be a repairable item or do you just usually replace?
pump is a gear pump so is not repairable. the clutch pack can be repaired but if there is wear on the hub or the drum then a complete pack might be the way to go

I’ve a complete pto pack off a 698 and a hydraulic pump kicking about if there the same.
Thanks @eulb , I might take you up on that. Probably wont get into tractor this side of Sunday as weather is dry and there is plenty to do. When I do finally get round to it I'll put a photo or two on here so you all can give me your prognosis, watch this space.

Did a 590 once, if the same split as you say but when split replace clutches and cylinder with new and also replace pto brake.
Agreed, it'll probably turn into one of those jobs where everything in there will get a wiggle, will probably look into the hyd lid as well I see a dampness at one end of the cross shaft so in guessing seals and probably bushings, also when the arms are locked up they don't stay up like they used to so maybe seals on main lift piston. Given the money it would take to replace a Tractor nowadays I'm happy to spend a few quid and then I know what I have. this Tractor is sitting with 18000hrs on it and other than a starter, headgasket, waterpump, a few back windows and hyd connectors it has been fault free. We bought it in 1989 secondhand out of England it must have been used for spreading lime as in behind every panel was white, we were washing white bits out for years.

Im just after having to pay to put a pto and a pump inside the 399, the mechaninc was told anything that he sees to do, do it, i didn't want to pay him twice and then again the parts aren't that dear tose ,assey of that age.

since then i have put the outside pump on too and now need to fit the drive to it.
