My 1957 "Goldbelly" 4 cylinder Ferguson 35 has broken its crankshaft. What's people's opinions on a brand new versus a secondhand crankshaft? How would I know if a secondhand one has/hasn't been ground etc?

Not sure re the new ones, I know they do the 3 cyl ones, heads as well, had no issue with a replacement head (it was cheaper to buy new than to et the old one skimmed/valve guides/seats cut) If you have a manual it'll tell you the bearing journal OD for the various sizes then it's just a question of measuring them with a set of vernier calipers. Would think plenty of undersize bearings available.
I'm sure if you keep your eyes open you should be able to find a decent 2nd hand one on STD/STD or if in a hurry would see about a new one. I wouldnt be putting a 2nd hand one in if the big ends and mains were at 60 undersize unless youre planning on getting rid of it

We had the head off and everything else is looking grand. It was ticking over in the yard here and it just started clattering. There was no load on it. I think it's just one of those things that happens. Mind you that's not what I said when it happened 😁. Is there anything that you would suggest that we should look at in particular?

One of those things that happens
Chances of finding s/h in usable condition could be slim also sometimes parts change during production
If I was looking for parts the first place I would contact is emmark

Agriline have one listed

At that price probably not worth the hassle of looking for and possibly having to polish / grind a used one
Agriline parts are a bit iffy to say the least, didn't you find that out with your
Liners for fergy??
Under no circumstances whatsoever would I use agriline after what I've read about them, even if I had parts for nowt

The liners were sparex not agriline, although i did have to get the rings from agriline as they were out of stock at sparex.

I haven’t used many agriline parts, but i have had a few things for the P3, sump gasket kit, rings, water pipes, filters and a few other bits. I had heard that some people don’t rate them, but to be fair to them what i have had so far i cant fault. Service is second to none, everything I ordered was delivered next day.

Edit, I don't think the sparex liners were to blame in any way, it was clearly my knowledge on how they should have been installed properly. That said a few companies seem to offer these finished liners, sparex and agriline are two, but I am yet to work out what they are for if you still have to get them bored or honed to size 🤷‍♂️

I find plenty of agriline stuff perfectly ok, no worse than lots of others, biggest problem is you can't trust what they say is the correct part, plenty of stuff will fit, and is ok, but not the actual correct part, they are also very good at sorting out any problems

In fairness to Agriline, I think that because they are very competitive on price and quick delivery, they are a chosen supplier of them on a budget, and most of them on a budget will be doing the work themselves, to the point themselves think they can do the work themselves, yet seem to have to ask a lot of questions about doing the job as they have little or no experience in this line of work, or are just fitters and not engineers,
Then blame the parts for their own shoddy workmanship, rather than admiting it was their own fault,
Now I am not saying its all good stuff they sell, but in most cases it will do the job,
Tin work from any repro manufacturer just is not right, and don't fit as original does,
As for engine parts, if it don't look or fit right, it should not be fitted from any repro manufacturer, whether that is Agriline or not,
They will buy in bulk off the same factory's as some other suppliers,
Take a water pump for instance, some will have it digitally measured on a machine that will get it exactly to 0.03 of a mm, send drawings off to a factory for production on cnc milling machines etc, where others will send a water pump and say copy this, all done under a crude measuring, but looks ok to sell on, and will do the job if it fits or made to fit,
People buy on price or quality, and you can have either, but quality comes at a price, that is the same with all things in life,
I have had some stuff off them in the past, and found it OK for the job I am doing,
I know everyone has to learn somewhere, but many times they blame the tools not themselves for it going wrong

I guess the Agriline and T20 crank will be made in the same factory somewhere half way around the world (India?)
At the end of the day, it's a crank, it wont be spinning up to 9,000rpm so as long as the journals are the correct size with decent fillet radii and it's in balance I'm sure it will do the job.
Re Agriline, I rebuilt one engine with their kit, it all fitted fine except the gaskets which looked like a 4 year old had designed them, very poor, how hard can it be to reproduce accurate gaskets!! Tend to use Bepco on anything I do now
