How do you slacken the alternator, a/c, compressor belt tensioner?

Haven’t actually had a close look at it so it may be very simple but shredded a belt this evening and as I glanced at it it just looks like a spring on a stick, figured I’d ask before fixing it in the morning.

I will guess it’s spring loaded and will have a hex nut head to accept a socket or a 1/2” square hole to take a breaker bar to lever against the sprin.
That only does the fan belt I think ?
that tensioner with the spring has to be undone to release the tension when they come new there is a flat bit of plate holding it compressed you bolt it on then flick the plate off to tension the belt

Are they still similar to the smaller 56/57s then? Kind of an arse about face of a way!!!

The fan belt has a radius tensioner but the smaller aux belt just has a straight spring mounted with two bolts.

@Lofty1984 do you have to release the tension or just compress it down and release the belt?

You will struggle to compress it down in place easiest way I’ve found is just undo the two bolts holding it on carefully and then put it in the vice to recompress it be easy to make a little plate to hold the tension before putting it back on

Cheers, I’ll cut the remaining half of the belt off when I get a new one tomorrow and squash it down in the vice.
