MIG welding without cracking

One thing no one has mentioned. When welding any crack, drill a small hole at the end to stop it spreading, if you just get going with the grinder, its poss to burr the end of the crack, and not grind far enough. Crack then continues on its way, I suspect thats what happened to the split rams. One other thing, I would stick weld with stainless or dissimilar rods.

I'm leaving it to Mr Larrington.

I know my limits.

I did turn the end weld off the drill boutmarker ram cylinder to get it apart and reseal it and then welded it back on.
But I am not messing around with the telehandler tilt ram. Some jobs are best left to the experts.

Thanks all for your advice. It has been useful as ever.

Wise decision. I have seen many perfect looking mig weld beads, all on the floor when they have jumped off the parent metal due to lack of penetration and rapid cooling! Its easier to make a cold shoulder look good, than a decent weld!

your spot on with the hole at the end/or just past the crack to stop it from spreading in metals.
in the hydraulic cylinder, if the hole was in the path of the seals then its not going to work if the repair was in the bottom of the cylinder or at the top unless your dainty with a die grinder to get the weld off.

thats a poor show from a well known brand, im surprised they used pipe like that, did the not spec the drawings fully i wonder or was it just a case of as cheap as possible when it comes to certain raw materials.
