No he definitely said up keep, no feed.
I'll come back on my costs (if thats ok)
I 'll shut up now, as I'm obviously the idiot.

You are no idiot and I find your comments interesting. Thank you.

Some dairy farmers are third, fourth fifth generation farmers, with owned property and land. This allows them to afford to take more risks and expand introducing new machinery etc which in context is a good thing. Clean concerted yards, robots and tractors with working heaters are nothing to be ashamed about, nor will these factors make them more susceptible to bankruptcy.

It is also nice to hear that farmers like yourself still exist and can continue to make a sustainable living. It makes such a refreshing change from hearing that bigger is better.

There is no right or wrong way to farm, as long as the enterprises are profitable.

The big win with parlours is they will easily do 25 years so long as cow numbers don’t change drastically, how old has anybody ran a robot to? Is 15 years possible?
But depends on what sort of parlour, most will need upgrades of some description at some stage, parlours need larger plate coolers, ice builders, now buffer tanks to allow more flexible collection windows etc.
These little bits add up to more capital and running costs on a parlour. I run both robots and a parlour and see advantages and disadvantages to both systems

In other words you don't know.

Farmers have a very poor grasp of the market for their products

What I do know is milk tankers are pumping milk into digested today and some farmers are being told that there might not be a home for there milk this weekend and may have to dispose of it themselves.

I do know this means that the spot market for milk is not good and even though we might not be self sufficient in milk it is likely to have a downward impact on milk price.

What we do have in the UK, even in a normal year, is an imbalance of milk processing capacity and farm production.

Markets have changed significantly in the last month. Worst time of year for that.

Are we still importing product from abroad that could be made in the UK? Or even keeping UK produced products off the shelf?

I know container shipping rates have risen since the CV outbreak.

Your bank managers gate/new tractor comparison is a bit random I think.
But my robots cost me 4litres/cow/day purchase and servicing, the other 36 litres is pure profit [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
OK - 4 litres a day to pay for the robot, but do your cows live on fresh air?? - or do they eat concentrates and need grass/silage,
oh! and what about the cost of raising replacement heifers, the electricity for milking and running the bulk tank?? do you have
hired labour/ relief milker- do they pay you for the privelage of working for you - are you related to ScotchBeef, because you
seem to be using the same calculator/fag packet to do your costings as he does.

Read pappullers post again and insert a generous amount of sarcasm and you might realise he isn't really on cloud cuckoo land

Just a question to those who wouldn't cope if they cut the price to 6ppl for 2 months, which is equivalent to a 3.9ppl price cut for one year, if your on 30ppl.
If you had that price cut, would you go cap in hand to the bank, or would you get by and ride it ?

I'd take a 3.9ppl drop for 12 months over 6ppl for 2 months. Its just cash flow. I wouldnt need to go to the bank for that.
6ppl now when we are building our reserve for the dry period is vital.
I take my hat off too you, but weve got to a situation *that I am comfortable with* that we have bought some land, and have a team of people here helping milk the cows, so I cant stick 6ppl

Also, guarantee its just 2 months? Because on day 1 the coos would have a value, day 50 with no end in sight, they wouldn't hardly make 50 quid fat as everyone would be killing them. It's not really worth thinking about, but if Saputo said tomorrow that we where going to be on 6p for a while, I would sell the cows asap, and start again as and when

Cows would go ASAP while they have value then get back in when suits
