My memory isn't the best at times so correct me if I'm wrong, but after the EU issued Russian sanctions in 2014 (Russia annexed Crimea), the European milk price collapsed (Russia retaliated by banning import of milk from the EU). I believe there was a lot of milk in the Eastern EU that flooded the European market when Russia closed the doors to it.

Does anyone have an insight into whether the same will happen again this time? Or are EU dairy products still banned from getting sent to Russia?
This was the final nail in the coffin quotas had just gone mk was growing everywhere and then russia stopped buying.
Not saying it couldn't have an effect but don't think those markets have been regained significantly. I think the whole world supply balance is different and many european countries and nz are now actively curtailing production.

If it all kicks off sanctions will only be used to suit. Europe may condemn russia all day long but it's reliance on gas is so significant it will stay buying and argue it has to honour contracts because it's short sighted run for green gas and closing nuclear means governments have left themselves with no alternative than to rely on russia.

In 2014 the EU milk prices did collapse, some was due to Russia but some of it was in anticipation of the quotas being lifted the following year, 2015. EU milk did find other homes, hence the expansion of a lot of dairy companies into Africa and the Middle East and also the development of Fat-Filled milk powder. Fat filled milk powder was developed to compete angainst whole milk powder being exported from NZ (Fat filled milk powder = Skim milk powder + palm oil).

Milk from Eastern EU did come into Western EU but it was mainly for the ingredient market to supplement exports.

EU products are still officially banned from sales into Russia, so it's difficult to asses the potential impact from an import export perspective apart from the obvious ones on the 3F's (Feed, Fuel & Fertiliser). We are seeing the increases already being priced in the international contracts, hopefully it's only a matter of time before there is an impact at the farmgate.
