Milling wheat 2023

This is the first of our milling wheat according to our Grainsense protein meter. Sent it off to frontier to see if they agree (unlikely) and what the hagberg is.

Just taken 70 loads of Zyatt and Skyfall into our local storage facility
40 loads over 250 Hagberg , 28 loads mainly around the 230 mark and 2 failed
68 loads over 13 % protein and 2 loads 12.9
Spec weights all pretty disappointing , mainly in the 73 to 74 zone
Yield 8.2 ton per Ha ,,,,,,,,,, 2 T/Ha down on last year
I should point out that I did mean trailer loads and not lorry loads , only in a small way I'm afraid

Bread (sadly is an ultra processed food these days so not at all good for us. -☹️ However this does mean if you read the ingredients list in a loaf it will contain “wheat protein” usually - this is added to the flour to create consistency ……….. it also means they can make bread from prett much any protein level wheat

protein deductions are just another excuse to pay farmers less ……. thrush is it doesn’t really matter anything like as. much as the suggest

Except it matters a lot because it keeps the price nice and low

Would anyone on here sell me a load of 13% protein wheat so I can blend???
cash up front
can be wet or low bushel (lower deductions than Central Storage)
guaranteed no rejection

How much was that meter ?
Bit of a toy but it helps with buying in grain for the hens if I can have a quick and dirty sample, rather than post it off to the lab and wait two weeks for the result.

I guess you’d better DM for the price as it followed a fair bit of negotiation. It ought to be cheaper really because as far as I can tell you can’t switch grain types or calibrate it without the app, and you can’t get into the app without the annual subscription.

Do you pay a premium for a higher protein wheat, such as milling wheat with a low hagberg that is no good for bread.

We haven’t done, I’m looking at it more from the point of view that you’d would tweak the amounts of soya and soya oil in a ration if you had a 10% protein feed wheat rather than say an 11.5%.

You can use milling wheat though, and perhaps this would be the year to consider it, it would depend on what premium you had to pay.

We aren’t talking massive tonnages, 20 lorry loads a year at most! 😂

I have wondered before about asking Heygates at Downham Market if they keep a list of alternative homes for rejected wheat. I guess they do.

Wouldn't they send it through the feed mill?

Would be interesting to know if you found out how much it would save you using 13.5% wheat rather than 10.5.

Our nutritionist drew up the recipes to do it a couple of years back.

It’s dependent on relationship between the milling wheat premium, the cost of soya meal and the cost of soya oil, and then whether or not you were trying to make a start, early, peak or mid lay diet.

A constantly moving target, which is probably by the big feed mills don’t bother to try it.

I think you might need a different username!
I’ve renamed him the Terminator
There was a problem at the local store with the sampler suction probe.
Mr Idle Git grabbed the probe arm - waiting to be picked up - looking like Arnie did at the end of Terminator 2
Problem was Mr Idle Git is quite a Cabfull & I’m not sure the probe arm would have coped ?
Instead he went up in the man cage on the JCB & fixed the pipe.
Hero ! The bloke has so much Charisma !
