Will, did you buy the Tithebarn type salt licks. The 25kg bags of lump rock salt generally work out cheaper than the processed brick type, you just have to make sure there are plenty of big lumps of rock salt in the bag for the cows.
We've got through a tonne of rock salt so far since the cows come in back in November. 300 cows

They have done you a forage analysis (feed value) rather than mineral analysis which will tell you whether you are deficient in anything.

Frank wright (who have analysed that for HJ) can also do the minerals. Get on to your rep and see if they still have the sample to do the mineral analysis from.

(Shameless plug - I think lump rocksalt is better and long lasting than processed bricks -http://www.rumensupplies.com/product/lump-rock-salt/ )

Iirc @TT. sells lump rock salt:cautious: but we get ours from MVF Liskeard as we need it. £5.85/bag but you do get some smaller lumps

From online search so have not used the companies:-

http://www.ballofmadley-hereford.co.uk/product.htm ( larger tote bags have large lumps of 15-25kgs)

You can generally tell how the cows are feeling by how they 'hit' the rocksalt.

Perfect timing

Just looked at the price for red rockies - Ouch:inpain:
http://www.tcscountrysupplies.com/rockies-red-rockie-salt-lick-2-x-10kg-182-p.asp

Brought a dozen rock salt licks today for the milk cows. Gave them 3 blocks tonight to get them use to them and will give them a few more tomorrow

Will, if you have any clean, unused packs take them back and see how their price for lump rocksalt compares. TT. 's price for lump rocksalt is pretty similar to MVF's but you may want a 25kg bag to try.

We generally give the weaned youngstock the small pieces.

Am certainly not suggesting you buy this horse product but the comparative description is quite good.(They range in price from £3.51 to £9.12:eek:)

Hiltons Herbs Himalayan Rock Salt Lick

Product Code: Option Specific
Himalayan rock salt licks are literally 'rock hard' this means that horses and ponies are unable to bite chunks off the block a problem that can occur with the softer pressed salt licks. These licks are also much more weather resistant and will not dissolve into a mush when left out in the rain which means they can be safely left outside in the field for the horse to self dose.

Had a 1.2 tonne dumpy last summer from our local independent supplier think it was 120/tonne, I know ball of madeley will do 1/2 tonnes not sure about 250kg, use a big bag a year 180 cows wouldn't be without it

@William Mellor have hjleaoakes told you that you need a 20% nut or is it what you always use ? It might not just be a mineral issue your silage samples would probably warrant a higher protein nut but it would be sensible to talk to your supplier before you start spending unnecessary money.

Himalayan rock salt can be delivered in 1/2 ton dumpy bags makes 25kg bags look v dear.

Think we must be the wrong end of the country again:cry: I rang Ball of Madley today and was quoted £180 / 500kgs and £350 / 1200 kgs del to South East Cornwall which makes MVF and TT. look quite competitive.

If you are where I think you are, G&R Leigh at Buxton would be fairly close and have 1.2t dumpy bags of Himalayan rock salt in stock, we've bought a bag for our sucklers. They can also do you a bespoke mineral if you want.
Your silage certainly looks low in protein, what's the cows muck like?
Muck is fairly average, none that are scouring nor loose, but not too hard.
