Buy a phone with gorilla glass.
One phone lasted 2 years without breaking a screen. It's replacement, without without gorilla glass, lasted 4 hours.

And even with Gorilla glass, as long as you have not got one of those silly curved screens, get a Toughened Glass screen protector.

I use one along with a silicone case that protudes above the screen.

I've been using a Cat s42 phone for about 4 yrs now. No case. Screen protector and rubber case from factory. Used to break 2-3 phones a year before. Phone works well. Been dropped many times. When dirty it's washed under tap. Battery lasts about 4 days.

Tempered glass screen protector & any case that wraps around the sides & is slightly raised. Around a fiver will get you a suitable case from Amazon

i think i had better stick to burner phone , i still break them in cases like that, in a matter of a week,They are too big now a days , so more stress on glass screen i reckon , a burner lasts years , just would like whats app ability , never mind back to stone age ,
smaller smart phones from 6/7 years back lasted well until it fell out of top pocket in hay field, found it after made hay chucked in hedge by teader , did not work! no surprise there
