Modern telehandler’s

After running a Jcb loadalls for as long as I can remember we’ve traded our 2008 526-56 after 5 years, to a 2015/16 version. A very similar machine in a lot of ways, but a few things are niggling me with the new machine after it’s 1st week, but suspect it’s on safety grounds or something...

1st.....and there’s a sign to say it’s what it does...it takes about 5 or 6 turns of the engine to start.....
2nd, it then has a delay after it eventually starts before you can use the throttle....
IMG_2978.JPG

On our old machine, it’s was 1 turn of the key, and away we went at full throttle!! Let’s be getting on!! It’s only a few seconds delay in total, but it’s really annoying me.

3rd issue...it’s on a joystick compared to the old 3 lever version, but there’s a good half second delay from pushing the joystick forward to lower the boom, and anything actually happening. A mate has the same machine and his is the same.

Then there’s the boom extension that’s taking a bit of getting used to, just so jerky even on the roller switch.

Maybe it’s just needs time to get used to it, but I preferred the old one at the moment.
Should I of swapped brand, or are they all like that for ‘safety’?

It's just a jcb thing almost every one coming from the old school 526s rear engine complains about the same this joystick delayed and engine taking longer to fire is a normal thing with common rails although some are better than others.

Do you not warm the machine up anyway, when its cold in the winter the hydraulics need to warm up.

14 plate 531 is the same both hot and cold.

Occasionally it will fire almost straight up, most times its 2-3 seconds churning.
Most times the throttle responds straight away, odd times you have to release and reapply to get revs.

I'm sure its the ecu being slow to properly wake up.

Probably every make of machine out there someone doesn’t like something about it
You can’t make a machine that every single person would like every little thing on it
I know every Jcb we’ve had they seem to alter something you did like,to something you don’t

We did the same swap last year and have noticed the same. Ours does quite a lot with a man basket and we have noticed it’s quite jerky bringing the boom down which is frustrating.

I do sometimes wish we had chucked a heap of money at the old one and kept it going but with 11000 hours on it it didn’t seem sensible at the time.

Another week in and I’ve a few other things niggling me, but they may be a fault rather than the norm.... aux hydraulic speed, using the muck or shear grab, I can only get it to open or close at the speed of my old loadall if I rev it up, otherwise is painfully slow at Is that how they are?
Then on the topic of hydraulic speed, it has a ‘bucket rattle’ facility which is nigh on useless... again is it a fault that’s come with a used machine with 4500 hrs on, or is that just what they are nowadays?
Do other brands have these issues? Just wondering which brand I should maybe be demo’ing

Demo a Claas.

So farm complaints have been limited to: too many mirrors on it you can damage. You can of course remove these or replace with a camera if you feel you will only destroy them.

Doesn't pull very well on the road (what handler does).

On our new manitou, the revs work separately from the speed, it’s a vario, so you just set the revs a touch up from idle which sorts the hydraulic speed, and use the foot pedal to govern travel speed. It’s wonderful!

I'm smiling at the issues you're encountering. The last 526 we got (new, 5 years ago ish) had soooo many things they'd changed from the previous version. We didn't bother with a demo as we just thought it'd be similar to the last one, doh. The non-revving for a couple of secs is standard now, soz. I was absolutely raging about some of the other issues and kicked up a fuss with JCB Head Office.

They were very good about it in fairness and came out to see what I was so upset about. The slow joystick response was easily sorted with a laptop, you could always ask if they'd do it for you. I imagine you'd have to pay as yours isn't a new machine. I totally agree that the bucket shake function is beyond pointless, but it's impossible to shake the bucket like the old machine as the joystick response is sooooo slow, so you're kinda snookered. I found the slowness to be a safety issue and made it known to them in no uncertain terms. We made them change one of the buttons to a transmission dump button as per the button on the back of the old joysticks.

We also had a massive problem with the positive backoff brakes that were on that machine at that time. Long story short, they replaced them with the old system that we'd never had a problem with. Anyhoo, if I were you I'd defo get in touch with them and see if they could pop round with their laptop.

Had an 08 class scorpion here for 3 days last week as my old merlo was ill . What a fantastic machine . Expect the newer ones to be even better . By that I mean they might have air con . It was chuffing warm stacking bales, but great bit of kit !(y)

Barely a few hours since my last post, and the next issue raises its head....
I’ve been to collect some rolls of Astro turf this evening to use a cow tracks. Got 2 rolls on the pallet tines, around 2 ton in weight. I extended the boom to reach the front of the trailer when loading from the back, and the damn thing just froze up, no hydraulics worked at all. Eventually after maybe 30seconds I got it to pull the boom in, but it wouldn’t crowd over, let down or anything, until the boom was further in.
Guessing it’s a safety thing, but I’m intending buckraking 2nd cut with it next week, well my dad will be, and I’m seriously concerned about weight going off the back axel when he’s rolling/moving grass above the clamp walls and suddenly it freezes up again in a dodgy spot on the clamp edge or against a wall.
