We are awaiting a building warrant for a new house with air source pump but also a small wood-burning stove. However the mad green zealots ( lots of them not in the Green Party) do not want heating from carbon sources in new builds. There may be exemptions in rural properties with higher risk of power cuts which we have annually, the longest being 3 days one January where the stove heated rooms and allowed some cooking. They only want electricity to heat homes.
Meanwhile all the cottage hospitals in our area had woodchip stores and boilers installed a few years ago to chase carbon neutrality.
So where does our electricity come from?
Drax imports millions of tons of wood and receives hundreds of millions in green subsidy for BURNING wood from USA. All carbon neutral.
When the turbines stop, Scotland imports electricity from the grid which is still 40% reliant on gas in England.
Yet we have tons of dead trees which will still emit carbon as they rot instead of burning and 10 acres of conifers which will be thinned to produce a never-ending supply.
The perfect cycle which Scottish Gov has just punctured.
