We get a fair bit if rain in the Bay. We are on pumice so need it every couple of weeks, starts to dry out after 3 weeks with no rain. Had a dry November and December but just made up for it with storm passing through. Trees down power out looks ok now but still no power on yet. What part of NZ? I never seen much rain, could not grow grass without irrigation, that was Canterbury plains
Have you got power back on yet? I can never understand why kiwi dairy farmers do not have generators on farm.Had about 75, mm so far this year ,but sweet FA in November, December 2017, had 1 phase drop out at 10.30am still not fixed and just had milk tanker collection at 8.15pm, no vat wash, no hot water, no running vacuum pump ,no idea if I can milk tomorrow morning....
But while checking power lines and pole fuses, I noticed some ewes were laying funny....under the power lines 4 dead and the line is still live
That's not blue. This is blue. What is that blue bit at the top of the photos? It's so long since I seen such a sight I can't remember
No Crocs, no snakes, only a couple of slightly posionous spiders. Our colonial cousins across the ditch have things that want to kill you.Have you got crocs in NZ?
Oh , we have power, just not 3 phase's ,Every single pole fuse has been replaced down the road bar one in the last 3 years, thats the one that blew yesterday . This has been the longest power outage that I can remember for probably the last 40 years, never more than 6 hours at the longest. Have thought about getting a standby generatorHave you got power back on yet? I can never understand why kiwi dairy farmers do not have generators on farm.
Think it was written somewhere that there were more cows milked in Soutland in the 40's than at the start of the 90's!!! , think most of them converted to sheep and beefDairy only came to Canterbury when irrigation started, 70s some time I think
Would have been a bit down in Southland before that but @Kiwi Pete will know more about it
What?? These? No Crocs, no snakes, only a couple of slightly posionous spiders. Our colonial cousins across the ditch have things that want to kill you.
There was a lovely, very big house built near here a couple of years ago. That looked to be similar construction to a steel framed farm building.
What is the advantage of a steel framed house @Zero Homes ?
Large scale seasonal, I think came after the border dyke irrigation schemes of that time, although there have always been smaller scale town milk suppliers around chch. Banks penisular ,Rangiora etc.Dairy only came to Canterbury when irrigation started, 70s some time I think

When did border dykes start, mid 70s?Large scale seasonal, I think came after the border dyke irrigation schemes of that time, although there have always been smaller scale town milk suppliers around chch. Banks penisular ,Rangiora etc.
Yeah, about sixties /seveties, there was a lot of idle plant and contractors looking for work after the big hydro dams were finished. Now all the borders have been converted to pivots. Also much of the associated water races are being piped, I am told this is to stop water loss through percolation. Advantage is water pressure is sufficient to get rid of on farm pump sets (plenty available cheapish on trademe at the mo). Disadvantage Ecan know exactly how much you are using, and apparently are going to be able to dish out water according to requirement. Borders used to waste too much water and land for races. Also it used to wash the sh!t off if if you got the time clocks wrong and flooded. Bloody immoral the way the greenies are trying to stop further irrigation. When did border dykes start, mid 70s?
Bloody greenies are going to totally ruin the country, can't they be rounded up and sent to Oz?Yeah, about sixties /seveties, there was a lot of idle plant and contractors looking for work after the big hydro dams were finished. One of the most dangerous r/soles is that pr*ck mike joy, seems like we will have to rely on Winston to stop most of the crap.Bloody greenies are going to totally ruin the country, can't they be rounded up and sent to Oz?
Border dykes gone ! I remember grubbing some up, I'm sure they got replaced further apart with a Lazer controlled grader
We would not pass the dairy Farm Assurance and therefore not be able to sell out milk in the UK unless we has a stand-by generator.Oh , we have power, just not 3 phase's ,Every single pole fuse has been replaced down the road bar one in the last 3 years, thats the one that blew yesterday . Not true at allWe would not pass the dairy Farm Assurance and therefore not be able to sell out milk in the UK unless we has a stand-by generator.
Not true at all
Of course they love contingency plans, but I have never ever heard a gererator mentionedIt was true some years ago when they asked. Have not asked since.
It doesn't have to be a Jennie of course. There must absolutely be a contingency plan to ensure milking can be done in the event of an outage though. So what is yours? Prayer?
As I asked, just what is your contingency plan if not a generator? Prayer and blind faith don't quite hit the spot.Of course they love contingency plans, but I have never ever heard a gererator mentioned
