great informative site. I have a R522-4TC/MT 422-FC Machine that needs a new pinion seal. when i took it apart there was this 6 inch diameter torque? thingy that was bolted to the drive shaft. i stopped removal trying to figure out what the heck i am looking at. 6 inch diameter with the drive shaft bolted to it kinda like some kind of torque deal.it is about 6 inches in length. the steel cover comes toward the transmissiion but i can see tightly wound rope inside. I am sure it needs to come off to replace the regular seal hiding in there. but once i remove the steel cover is it all going to come unwound?

so i took off the three bolts that holds the round outer case and the steel sleeve can be driven toward the transmission. the tightly wound rope then becomes visible.
any ideas?

that would simplify the seal install. Just unwind rope seal and replace, no need to unbolt anything.
the rope must be of the type that would expand when installed and trapped under the steel collar.I wonder if just removing the rope and reinstalling would make any difference?
there also must be a factory procedure for this?
HEY thanks for the help

i took it apart. The rope was a dirt dust preventer to keep the seal clean. I rotates with the shaft
new seal and some more plastic rope and i am set to go

ok, i agree , i will clean up the piece, which is one piece of steel, put a new seal in . and rework the cap which got mangled. that seal in there was totally gone. It looks to me the curved recess on the end of piece with rope on it ran inside the seal with the cap trying to keep dust out.Maybe a large diameter o ring in that recess which would rotate against the fixed seal. Or the original seal had a large diameter o ring type lip the ropey piece slipped into. that seal is not available from mantou and a regular looking seal would not seal.
