did anyone actually challenge the cops interpretation of the law?i know all the council tractors around here drive around with forks pointed down unguarded.have no idea why they use forks assume for picking up branches and stuff as they aint mucking sheds out.most cops haven't a clue on tractor laws and just make it up.

if fork is 10 foot in the air his kids are on a bus?and if you hit a loader back plate head on yer pretty much fookit.

We got done a couple of years ago for no guard on muck fork. We made a guard out of crash barrier that folds down off the grab. When we made the guard I phoned the police and asked if someone would call in and decide if it was acceptable. It was the same guy who booked us and he was happy with what he saw.

I plan to have a guard made of square tube with lugs welded to the top of the fork to hold the cover when not in use and give a slight increase in capacity when it is stored. Two pins to hold it and easy on/off. Should only take a decent fabricator an hour to knock it up.

how about a piece of 4inch gas pipe with a slot cut in it and two long springs to keep in place

This is what I made up for our stone grape. Just angle iron and a few bits of box section with some flat bar to hook over back.

Don't like being critical, as your guard looks well made.. but what happens once the tines start getting a bit bent?

plan is to replace any bent tines with the 2 top side ones which are not really needed imo.

usually try not to dig stones out with the grape . I pull it out with back furrow of plough , drag onto stubble and scoop it up from there . if the plough cant get it I use the forklift . folk might say the likes of chae's are pebbles but there no point wrecking kit to be a hero , just use your noggin

Seen a variation on this theme today, on busy main road coming up to Bromsgrove, JD loadall, wide fork protected with assortment of different 5/10 litre spray cans, each with its neck pushed over the point of a tine. Fork crowded back and points about 3ft off floor. You couldn't make it up.
