In the article I read today, the successful applicant will be "given" a flock of sheep from some conservation charity.

So the tenant doesn't even get to choose the breed of sheep!

It looks a lovely place to live, but with my problems with authority would not cope well with the restrictions.

I never knew. More research required I believe...

you'll have to hurry ....their 'dairying history' seems to be being expunged from records.....first time i googled 'llyen' i found that out quite easily.....this time i had to search a bit....google 'guycliffefarm':)

llyen breeders don't want you to know their secret of prolificacy and milkiness?

is that what you're earning out of milk:eek:...TBF you're not the most 'environmentally friendly' farmer are you;)
No, but that's what I'd want for managing a loss-making £1 million estate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What would you say such a responsible position was worth. Its no more than a footballer living a few miles up the road earns in a week. Probably substantially less than some of them.

Funny you should say that.... Part of the job will likely involve getting sheep back from Neville Southall's garden!

What a bunch of grumpy barstewards you lot are. Part time work off the farm, move the sheep when you come back from work. House rent for £1 a year is worth an awful lot of hassle.

I think you will have to move the stock at a set time of the day!

The NT may well say the famer cannot hold an off farm job!

Perhaps Mr Monboit should take it on and prove to us all hes right. Dont think the NT would want it totally re-wilded though.

Bg

Well I favour George Monbiot farming this, he will be so out of puff that he will be pushed to write anything of an evening, It might also change his mind.

As far as the overall deal - I think that you have to take the long view on this, someone young will be able to make this a stepping stone, it reduces a lot of fixed costs as they cab ignore long term maintenance costs. You cannot get away from the fact that the landlord is making this decision and they are the owners of the land - so good luck to anyone that can make a go of it as the first rung on the farming ladder at the landlords expense.

I might still favour it going to George however . . . .

I guess the only way to make it pay would be to attatch an NT label to the few lambs you are allowed to fatten on the better ground, then sell them for absolute top dollar. I've been in an NT gift shop before - stick on that green label and you'll have middle class twits queueing up to buy your goods for several times the going rate.
