NAVAL/JOINT ILL IN CALF

Okay, I have a 9 week old Breford calf. She has had one round of RESFLOR GOLD in the neck and a synovial injection of Gentamycin into infected joint a few weeks ago. Today when I went to feed, I noticed the other front 'knee' joint was swollen and she was limping again. I called they vet and they recommended another round of Resflor Gold (every 48 hours) and the synovial injection into infected knee. I was wanting to know if anyone on here has had any success treating naval/joint ill in their own calves? Please help! This little heifer is my BABY!

We usually give 3 -4 doses of Pen & strep for joint ill

I have had occasional cases where Tylan has worked

Resflor is a pneumonia drug, I'm not sure I'd be using that for joint ill

Have you spoken to your vet ?

Yes, that is what our vet gave us. Resflor Gold every 48 hours for 2 doses and Gentamycin in joint.

Agree. For us it's 4 days of Synulox/Noroclav that works without fail on navel ill. Never been troubled by joint ill much though.

Is this the calf you were bottle feeding?
You are in the USA so maybe a different approach over there.

Not had joint ill here (yet) but infected navel gets antibiotics for 5-7 days, usually sorts it.

We found pen and strep wasn’t working well for us so swapped to noroclav and that cures it pretty quick. Joint I’ll is a bugger because if the damage is done it’s not really fair on the animal as it gets heavier.

That’s the typical treatment here. Or sometimes Nuflor for 3-5 days instead of Resflor.

It’s also fairly common to apply DMSO topically to the joint however there is debate as this is an off label use for DMSO in Cattle so you can and will run into anal party poopers when it comes to that.

Yes, I am in USA. It's joint ill from the naval ill... we do our second round of Resflor Gold tonight, well see how it goes over the next week! thank you!
