Neighbours no fence

Hi,

We are a sheep/cattle farmers. Our neighbour is The same. On one of his boundary’s with ours he has no fence and his cattle push down the bank and through our fence into our field. Asked him to put up a fence but just ignores us and if we billed him for the damage he would again ignore it.

Any ideas?? Trying to stay away from the legal route.

I have the same problem, they will not fence their boundary to me.
The other day I had 42 Angus bullocks on my yard. Called him to get them. Some days I think I will leave my yard gate open to the road then they can wander off.

We had a neighbour like that, years ago, but with sheep. They were forever pushing through the hedge, and they’d eventually run them back and tie the fence up with a bit more string. The field they got into was by the road and went into a cereal break for a couple of years. I confess that the gate was taken away and replaced with a double strand of barbed wire one winter, and they decided it was time to sort their fence out then, purely by coincidence.

I dread to think what would have happened if his sheep had caused an accident on the road, but sometimes.......?

The joys of living in the countryside! Sadly we all have different standards. When people cannot agree it is time to look at the paperwork.
I think you do need to consider legal advice to see what can be done. Maybe the fencing obligation is on you!

Can you explain further.
I have to fence to keep others stock in?

Sometimes, yes. A lot of the external fences on this place are marked as 'mine' on the tenancy map. I have one neighbour that insists that I'm responsible for trimming his side of the hedge (I just pay his contractor for a couple of hours trimming to keep the peace) and another that doesn't see why he should fence his tack sheep in (I've refenced my side to keep his rats out, again, it's the easier option). Some people are just tw*ts and not worth the raised blood pressure.

Doesn't sound like that's a simple option for the OP though, as the fence would have to be sorted on the neighbour's side to stop them coming down the bank.
