Net Zero - its over.

It was obvious it was always going to be ridiculous but we've reached the point now where it is being mocked.

I'm sure we will evolve away from fossil fuels in due course, but net zero is dead. Good thing too because whether you are a climate change acolyte or not, as a policy it was absolutely idiotic.

The only it can even ever begin to work is if electricity is so cheap its giveaway, and that may happen one day but not yet

How do you mean, net zero is dead?

Its starting to filter through to the political and media class that it is not going to happen. The targets of any sort are going to be so comprehensively missed and so expensive for average Joe that it won't happen at all. The country cannot afford the economic pain of doing it, the more we spend on uncompetitive net zero vanity projects the faster our debt pile grows and those at the ballot box will have an even worse quality of life.

If there are cheaper and better alternatives for the masses then things would happen a bit faster (ie solar having a 5 year payback for everyone, electric heat pumps running in houses for virtually nothing) but the tech isn't there.

That is what Westminster wants. The ideology for UK is to copy the Hong Kong model 🤦🏻‍♂️
All very well for the services classes but for production and manufacturing here it would mean the end of the road.
I’m all for reducing fossil fuel usage, alternative energy and waste reduction but net zero should be a gradual consequence not a prime objective. The timescale for change ought to be a century, not twenty years.

Problem this country has is those who walk (and rule) the halls of Westminster haven't much of a clue there's life outside of London.

The rest of the country is just a holiday jaunt to them

Of course- the political class live in London, are never affected by crime, send their children to the best private schools in the land, use private healthcare and have fabulous salaries and pensions the likes of which are rarely seen outside the public sector.

The big problem with Net Zero is that it isn’t physically possible in any way. Never was.

Net Zero always was creative book keeping, nothing more, nothing less.

All that’s happening now is that people are just about starting to ask questions. These questions have been around for years but the wrong people were asking them, people whose voices were completely drowned out. Now a handful of people with a degree of influence are starting to stir, the noise is slightly louder. Guterres used the word adaptation for the first time the other day, that was a revelation. He also used some other words sadly….

Pretty sure Rishi is going to adopt Liz Trusses policies over time. If so I applaud him.

Rishi is just a slower Liz Triss. He got us to the same interest rates eventually.
The pragmatist would say invest in air conditioning and reservoirs. Those will be more useful than anything in the medium term.
Trees are a fire hazard.
