New cattle shed

Planning to put up a cattle shed for up to 50 spring calves. Could go as wide as 60 and as long as 140, but ideally only 120 to have more room at either end. Been talking myself round in circles with it tbh. Keep doing some scribbles but thought I'd see what setups others have. How much feed space would they need? Feed them a bale with unroller currently to restrict intakes. Wouldn't want to go ad lib as we did that first year we had them and calves were massive, with overfat cows.

I'd like to have a scrape and prefer feeding one or both sides as feel centre passage is just a waste of space.

Is there anyone using an outside feed passage? Had an idea for a 40' with outside scrape/feed under cantilever to maximise bedded area but keep cost down.

Would like cows to come out of scrape into set of pens to bud box and then maybe a race full length of shed to make handling easy.

Will be pricing a couple different versions of shed as will depend on landlord as to whether we can build it or they want to build it.

That's it for now.

Is it for cows or calves? My preference would be 30ft bedded area 15ft of scrape passage, feeding outside underneath cantilever. 120ft long for that many. Also make it nice and high so you can always use the shed for something else.

What’s the estimated time to repay investment?

I think you'll enough feeding space from 1 side if that makes things simpler? Mines 60' deep 14' feed passage, if they're on ad lib feed I don't think they need anymore space than that.

Cows would start calving in March with turn out of calved cows in April weather permitting. Plan is to make it 18ft to waves if we put it up so there's plenty of stanchion left if we ever need to move it. Likely the same heigh if landlord puts it up as could be used as a grain store in future.
