There is a lot of them engines about to be fair and they pull very well too. 2.5 litre hilux are more reliable but they are also gutless so aren’t working very hardMy Ranger had its oil pump changed for a new genuine Ford pump, about a month ago. This was done at the same time as a general service and MOT at 78,000 miles. No idea what the cost was as I have yet to receive the bill, which will doubtless wing its way here to be paid by Christmas.
The mechanic who did it, who did his apprenticeship and worked for years with my usual mechanic, has done dozens of these over the last five years but has yet to do one that had seized. Perhaps most of those go straight to a Ford main dealer?
He has had more than a handful of four and five cylinder Fords with a broken piston though. Seems to happen randomly with the lowest mileage example being just over 50,000 and highest just over 200,000 miles. Most never fail but too many do. It might be caused by an injector issue, but not sure.
This 2.2 engine was fitted to the later Defenders of course and one would assume it to be prone to the same failures.
Fairly sure it was the subject of a formal recall - I certainly know that mine was done before I got it as I checked with LR HQ.This 2.2 engine was fitted to the later Defenders of course and one would assume it to be prone to the same failures.
Yes, Land Rover recalled the Defender and Ford recalled the transit, but never the Ranger which has the South African built but apparently identical version of the engine. So the UK/European built engines were recalled to fit the modified oil pumps but not the engines made at the Struandale, South Africa factory which had exactly the same issue. Beats me!Fairly sure it was the subject of a formal recall - I certainly know that mine was done before I got it as I checked with LR HQ.
mines been on order since may and still can’t give me a date,so far they’ve removed the digital driver display and clear sight mirror from my original order, last conversation I had with dealer they showed me latest information from JLR and it was the tow bar and 22” wheels holding it back from entering the build pool…personally I don’t think I’ll see it this year
