Leading seed producer Barenbrug has launched Ensign RED - a new unique blend of two red clovers, 60 per cent Trevvio and 40 per cent Lemmon.

This particular blend balances production through the growing season while giving excellent persistency and resistance to disease.

Red clover swards offer livestock farmers the ability to meet forage requirements while significantly improving protein content. It is better suited to silage production than white clover because of a much more erect growth habit, up to 80cm, and its significantly higher forage yields.

Said James Ingles, Barenbrug’s Head of Agriculture, “Lemmon is a very persistent, high yielding variety, recommended throughout the UK. Trevvio was added to the French recommended list in 2010 and is currently in UK trials. It is a very high yielding variety, with excellent persistence and protein content.

“Ensign RED is a great addition for livestock farmers looking for top quality forage as it has high crude protein content 16-20 per cent and a ME content of 10 to 12MJ/KG DM.

“Low levels of structured carbohydrate in the leaf result in higher intakes, better feed conversion and therefore improved animal performance. Plus Trevvio has an exceptionally high yield with 11t DM/ha in the first cut.”

what are it's levels of oestrogen tho ??
Red clover seed producers here dont seem to like talking about estrogen levels. The only variety I've found that mentions it is from PGG and it just said something like "low to moderate". Dealer couldnt put any numbers to it or give me any comparative info.

What's the seed rate?
If you were going to sow into an existing sward the maximum seed rate would be 2kg/acre, typically 1 to 1.5kgs.

It would work very well in a new ley made up of Hybrid ryegrasses as they would cover the same production period, in that case you would sow 3kgs/acre.

You would not sow Ensign Red as a pure stand.
