So long as the abattoirs continue to close, rather than re-open, it's just words. So long as the supply chain continues to get longer and more concentrated, rather than shorter and more diverse, then it's just words. Fully appreciate that it's decisions on high that are the problem, you can only do what you can do.

Could you point us to anyone in Defra working specifically on the abattoir issue whom we could lobby ?

Thing is with Eustice you can see every single time he speaks he knows what is being proposed will finish the industry. Its basically him and Boris hoping that farmers will just carry on as normal using any savings or sweating assets to produce food.
It does not help when you get the youngsters writing articles or doing interviews saying they have diversified into things like tourism or storage to make up the loss of the BPS. That is just very bad business because they are then doing what the government want which is we subside ourselves to produce food at a loss.

I had pleasant chat with Janet this morning.
I will hold my hand up and admit I have been very critical of lots she been trying to do.
But.. chatting on the phone I do get the impression she is genuine in her attempts to do these new schemes right for farmers.
Probably a breath of fresh air in a stale rotten system.
I hope she can achieve her goals and I am looking forward to working with her and her team on a topic in relation to the schemes.

Fingers crossed we have someone who is on the farmers side and understands how we being kicked from every side at the moment.

I do tend to agree here. I feel that secretly janet may be as frustrated at the system and how defras relashionship with farmers has been in the past. I do think she is trying her best for us just those higher up have very little clue.
