New Holland LM 430 Powershift query

I've just recently purchased a nice 2001 example of a LM430 powershift telehandler. It is fitted with a four speed powershift gear box, of which you tootle up and down the gears by twisting the shuttle lever forwards and backwards.
I'm very happy with the machine, but the powershift has an unusual quirk..
When you attempt to move the machine from the stationary position, and push/pull the shuttle lever forwards/backwards, it won't engage drive; you have to first twist the shuttle forwards, and then it will engage drive.
However, if the wheels are moving, you can quite happily shuttle directly between backwards and forwards without any loss of drive. But should the wheels stop, the next movement of the shuttle will not engage drive. You then have to twist again.
As you can imagine, I'm finding this a little frustrating. It would be a lot simpler if when you moved the shuttle it engaged first time..
So, essentially, my question is to someone who has owned / driven a similar machine; is this normal operation?!

Hello yes this is normal on the new Holland and yes its dam annoying! I could sell you a Manitou f/r lever which does not do this and works normally but I think they are many hundreds of pounds as as well as it being the f/r lever and all the gears it has a mini ECU in it controlling transmission they very rarely give problems though so you will have to get used to it or replace a perfectly fine working part all be it an annoying one!

Thanks for that AC, I can't think why anyone would deliberately program it to do that. It's a bit like on a manually geared machine, that the gear lever pops into neutral every time you stop!
Any chance there might be a software fix?

99% sure the software cant be accessed via a dealer only who ever makes the lever.
Its a saftey feature in case you knock lever when exiting the cab. The old mlt 628 with power shift worked normally trouble is finding a mlt628 powershift that's breaking and has cab not burnt will be next to impossible as very few built.
