You are obviously very lucky to have them to help you.do you book them well in advance of harvest or just call when you want them
Nick...

No. I'm not that organised! They always finish before me & usually ring me when they have done so to a) gloat that they've finished before the local big b*ll*cks estate and b) because most years I'll say, "good for you. Would you like a bit of extra work? As above, it's rarely contractors - mostly neighbouring farmers who have 1-2 people working there & they need to finish combining before they can cultivate/plant osr etc so have sufficient capacity to do so. I manage with our own machine when the weather is kind though one downside of being near the south coast is the frequency of summer rainfall, even if the total isn't that much more than most. 16 days of measurable rainfall so far in harvest, with at least 18 days of harvesting lost as a result. 30-40" annual rainfall.

I have a mate in Canada that custom cuts & he went from 6 John deere combines to 2 claas 780 & they cut 9000 acres each a year , but after 3 years they are worn out
Claas grew their market share in Europe very successfully with the launch of Lexion. 2 combines in part exchange for 1 was an easy sell, even if the price for 1 was higher than the competition. Even if the jump isnt that big this time, 3 for 2 or 4 for 3 would be an attractive swap for big area farmers I'm quite sure.

I wouldnt worry too much about the added labour requirement for 2 combines. A post on faceache looking for owner-drivers would have the farmers sons literally stampeding to your door. Whats the going rate for corn cart from that crew, £25 an hour? Let em hitch up your trailer and away you go.

How much is an artic for a day, they can shift some volume.

I'm sure you will get plenty of offers, them being good enough is a different matter.

No, Dorset/Hants/Wilts border. It's on my profile but if you're posting from a smartphone even tipping it on its side doesn't show user's locations any more since upgrading to the new platform @Chris F

It’s shows on an iPad in portrait mode. Wonder what differences are being picked up - will add it to the list.

Thank you. My iPhone doesn't show location in either view. My iPad does in portrait view. Being able to see a poster's location helps calibrate the response, IF they have put it on their profile in the first place...

Wow, having changed Class combines many times over last 20 years I cannot believe the price hike this time around, talking hybrids (7400-8900's) only? Yes, new drum/concave segment will give 10% more apparently. Other than that what justifies the huge price increase over last 4-5 years? Claas will say R&D no doubt. Will new Lexions be unaffordable in the way that self-propelled sprayers are for combinable crop growers now? Are CNH and Deere as expensive? Anyone on contract hire with a new machine must be writing out a hefty annual cheque, must be rediculous. Apparently many are considering/asking to finance over 6-8 years.
