can you imagine millions doing that and what the countryside would then look like ? what do they earn money at? or do ? all goes round and round in circles on one hand most small farms hardly make any money lose money will get worse now due to cuts in subs but on the other hand , escape to the country, dream farm, play at farming the good life ?

I think the idea would be to be self-sufficient, so not selling anything but not needing to spend money either. Oh, and start a Youtube channel to show the world what you're doing and earn some serious cash.

Or have something like the crofting commission to oversee it (I think they do) all. Breaking up some of the big farms and having smaller places and more local community is what we need to go back to.

There’s some pretty derelict rough looking places around run by professional farmers.
there’s thousands of people who could cope quite well with a small holding and some outside work for extra income.
Farming aim rocket science!

depends on if you want cheap mass food, so big farms well funded with the latest machinery tech etc, or try the subsistance way ? size of population and land area is the simple problem?

Probably produce more, healthier and a product worth more to the grower from well looked after small acreages than teched up modern factory farming.
Small acres where you can go out and have another income from joinery/roofing/bar work/welding/ supermarket shelf stacker/escort/I.T work/sales. Room for both in your life.
