All credit to you. I didn't like the fact that you assumed I was stupid enough to buy on price alone, I did just as great in grass said and asked the price of the seeds I had chosen from an online catalogue. The price was just the icing on the cake.
No fair play ,
I sell very little of that cheap mix ,just use it around gates and ponds mainly to patch up .
I'm a good bit cheaper than HMs online catalog, probably inline with HMs discounted price , but like I said most of my in-stock mixes vary to those in the catalogue, I like to include Timothy which does well around here armoung other things , I also stock a vast range of straights which farmers collect on a daily basis

just another example that shows how many others earn money out of farming besides the farmer.
Yes you want to try it sometime, walk in someone else's shoes for a day , they were quieing here for seed this week before it rained , where else would they get a custom mix on their doorstep at a few hours notice , yiu know what farmers are like , yesterday is to late 😂

Oh Sage of the west you may kid yourself you know the mix to suit many local farms my farm varies from field to field grass seed is bought to suit and the only unchanging factor is the merchants profit. Iam old enough to realise a sales pitch or have you reincarnated from forage trader?

If it varies then vary it ,plenty of options
What's forage Trader got to do with anything, we sold seed 50 years ago , why on here and no other place do people need to constantly justify what they do
One of my straw loads in Pembrokeshire today.Me finishing off sowing grass seed tonight
I do a lot of things
so what 😂

Direct drilling as taken off in West Wales this last few years , was it the grant job on drills not sure but a hell of a lot more seeding being done , lot easier I suppose than having to plough

To be fair, the grant scheme must be like the golden goose to pushy grass seed salesmen. Lots of new folks thinking they can turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse by stitching some fancy mix in.
I admit I tried it too, seeing as I love to experiment, but learnt, as many of those grant beneficiaries will do in time, that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

Make hay, the sun don’t shine for long.;)

All you can do is be honest,if the farmer don't like it then it's not your fault
Like this guy ,we decided that direct drilling would not suit this field without some cultivation, he was quite happy

Do you have any high sugar varieties of cocksfoot over there? Living in a county that bills itself as the "Grass Seed Capital of the World", I have several smaller high tech companies I can source small amounts to trial from. Getting a single bag of something from the big internationals can be difficult though PGG has partnered up with one of my favorite grower/distributors here. Kind of nice to be able to buy a single bag of something, get a cup of coffee and a sit down with their agronomist who's actually interested in what you are trying to do and how you are trying to do it. They tend to see us as beta testers I think and want you to be successful as word travels fast in the valley. Will be putting a bag of GO's high sugar cocksfoot (we call it orchard grass) in to a 7.5 acre herbal ley I'm doing this fall.

And you say fancy mix . Have mixes changed that much . The mainstay mix sold today by most companies is Perennial Ryegrass, Timothy White Clover , just the same as the mixes we made up in the 70ts , just veriaties have changed with improved feed value digestibility and yield , nothing new about custom mixes ethier , but dad only had to drive 30 miles down the road to Dyfed Seeds to have it mixed and a lot of the seed was grown local
The stand out grass would probably be Timothy that's still included in mixes after all this time
