New Massey!!?

My trailer man decided to play hide and seek in the dark behind me. it was not a gatepost!!!

I looked at a more recent MF and viewed another two - one was a 1999 model and the other a 2008 (both the 8 straw walker ones). There was almost no difference between the two which surprised me.
I spoke to various people running MF combines and asked them what had made them choose them- the answer was nearly always something like' we've always had masseys'- I thought this was poor reason for choosing anything.
They have a poor second hand value unless your trading in against a new MF
The fact that they've decided to paint them green now (but not alter them in any fundamental way is telling)
JD is the global leader with CNH close behind- Claas is the leader in Europe.
I would say any of these three would be a better bet than either an Agco or Argo combine.

MF combines are the Patek Philippe of the combine world. Exclusive and elusive. Not considered as a viable purchase by the hoi-palloi, the common people who lack the taste and ambition to own pedigree, performance and quality. They are the brand of combine that some others have a war-chest of cash to take out of the market. Rivals are extremely afraid of their resurgent popularity, because they know that MF have the combine engineers that can deliver a product that will show them up in most sectors apart from the massive class. Many owners of rival brands are extremely jealous and, typically, like to run the MF down in most ungentlemanly ways based on no experience of their own. It shows themselves up to be what they are rather than do any real harm to the sale of MF combines to connoisseurs and the cognisant.

Interesting points raised here! Firstly the comment we have always bought Masseys! Yes I have heard this many times myself, not to be disrespectful to owners I think it's not as simple and clear cut as a lazy decision.
As someone who has purchased various makes and models of machinery over the years you are aware of good relationships with suppliers which you have dealt with for many years, the parts people the fitters, the list goes on, and more importantly the price of the machine!
I ran market leading Hitachi, Jcb, Komatsu but a stray into Daewoo, ( Doosan now) which was a far cheaper brand to buy and at that time lacked a little finess however,it was reliable and had good backup at that time! However like the Massey Combine residual values were somewhat on the floor unless a like 4 like part exchange for a new one.
But the point is this that Daewoo earned the same money as the other market leaders cost of ownership was negligible and when it came to dispose of machine you couldn't expect market leading residual returns as you never paid for that up front of the deal!
We have Massey combines from 1953 to 1987 yes I know old hat now and rightly so but if you strip the tin work off its a type of groundhog day scenario, in its lay out!
Regarding reliability well the sales figures would have us believe the Massey is a lemon, but how much of Massey problems is the machine, the build quality, and the disastrous product back up support should all be added to this very sorry tale, unless you live on the east coast where customers fair better in general!
With what I am hearing I think it's far to early to write this lot off!!
But what the he'll do I know I'm not even a farmer!!

Cheapest combine we ever had was a 12ft 510, bought scrap for £175, drove it home 40 miles, used it for 4 years and sold it for £600, having only spent on oil and filters.

David a tale I have heard so many times!! And we are guilty of the same I guess!!
Don't get me wrong what technology have brought us today is quite astonishing!! In the harvesting world, but the complexity of the machines no matter what brand means there will be problems! Don't forget you can develop software to cover most scenarios, but ultimately the link between the controls and seat, and steering wheel thinks he is always right!!? And that I'm afraid is where many problems begin! And is the downfall of even the so called best combines! Currently available.
