New Ranger vs New Amarok

Just come back from Wilshire in my 70 plate vw v6 and no towing mostly motorway driving and it returned 44mpg. Got a 73 plate ranger here as well and 28mpg if you are lucky.
You must be using cheap diesel ⛽️🤣

Joking aside, I can only comment on what I get from mine, but what I have noticed is how many non owners are quick to slate the Ranger, without even sitting in one let alone driving them!
I used to absolutely slate automatic gearboxes in pickups till I got one, now I’d loathe to drive anything but an automatic now.

I chopped in a "19" Navara N Guard auto at 2 years old, could't get on with it at all, had another manual for 3 years and always enjoyed it, this V6 Ranger is something else though, hadn't planned on one as would have been happy with the bi turbo but this was all they had available for March, was also concerned about the insurance over the "21" Nav but @ 52p/month more than the Nav, top decision all round !!!

The Ford AJD-V6 was a 3.0 fitted to the Disco 4, 5 and Rangie Sport.

The 3.2 fitted to the Ranger from 2011 on is an in line 5, unconnected to the PSA/Ford 3.2 above.

The 3.0 Amarok has a 3.0 version of the AJD-V6. I does not have the Ford In line 5 fitted
Amusing that the new VW Amarok will be powered with an engine made in Daganham...
How on Earth, after well over a century of mass production, do we still have to discuss dodgy engines!? It’s a bit of a joke really, reliability should be a given by now.
Because everything is built cheaper with a lifespan in mind. Everything is plastic. Best engines were made in the 2000s... The volvo 5 cylinders, TD5 and the VW PD 1.9 TDI...

It’s not. This generation engine is manufactured at Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

I presume you to be of a certain age. Everyone’s golden age of automobiles is relative to their age and the point where they became interested in cars. Maybe about when they were between 16 and 21. Would you perhaps be in the age range of between 38 and 49?

Had a pd 130 Audi A4, 51 plate, cracking car, just checked online it had 174k on it the last time it passed an mot. Had an ‘05 a3 pd 105 after, not quite so exciting but did 70mpg happily, those were the days 😂

went downhill after that with an ‘06 octavia vrs 2.0 pd but it had a dpf, wasn’t a great combo, mpg has got worse on every car since

I've an old Ibiza 1.2 12v petrol, would love a PD130 but they've all been bought by boy races and ruined.
Think it would actually be the last car to have the PD as the 6L Ibizas finished up in 2008.

Just looking at one of the last old shape rangers registered jan 23. How much would this have been new. They want £27,500+vat now(13’000miles) , just wandering how much it’s lost

Four months ago I took delivery of my new Amarok Panamericana to replace my old V6 high line Amarok . The new one impressed me with its very SUV type ride and interior and general quality feel but the one area I definitely thought that it was not as good was in the engine department. The old machine felt quick and alert the new one lazy by comparison . Two weeks ago I had a tuning box fitted by Bluespark and it really has improved the drive. You can change the type of response you want via Bluetooth from economy to torque to hp or variations In between, fitted it myself and was under £400 . Genuinely drives so much nicer now and I kept the old version and now it compares very well.
Just saying 😀

Quite by chance, found myself (and my Ranger) in the same field as equivalent Amarok a week or so back.
Both v6 diesels, both reliable and no problems (touch wood!). Looking at them together, I actually prefer my 15k ranger - at rear.View attachment 1168779

I’ve taken one old shape 2.0 Amarok to 150k miles and a second 2.0 one over 100k miles so far and haven’t had more than an EGR valve and water pump belt between them. So I’d really hope you haven’t managed to break a new shape one yet!

The older Rangers are certainly very thirsty compared to the latest ones. To the tune of about 4 to 5 mpg given the same route on the same day, driven by the same driver. The very very best my 2.2 auto Ranger gets is 32mpg. I’ve already seen 37 on the new one. These figures are not representative of the average mpg of course but I do get 33 over 500 miles of light mixed driving while the elder 2.2 gets around 28mpg on similar work.

Thing is though, the 2.2 does not do similar work for any sustained time as my 2.0 bi-turbo. It does far more short journeys, carrying and towing. So far anyway. Probably always will but with retirement on the horizon, one or both may well be culled over the next couple of years.

70 plate 258bhp VW V6 44mpg on a long journey.

73 plate new shape Ranger 2.0litre 28mpg on a long journey if you are lucky.

Brand new Amarok just arrived and it’s very very early days only having done 600 miles but it’s 21mpg presently. It’s the 240bhp V6. It’s not a patch on the proper 70 plate Amarok in terms of power. No where near in fact. It’s sluggish in comparison. VW have made a right cock up doing a deal with Ford on these trucks.

You will be happy buying that tuning box I did . Still got my old one here but the new one now is as sprightly and alert . I do agree the V6 in the new one is not a patch on the old but can be made to do it .

You mean VW have made a right cock up putting their badge on a ford

Same here; just an abs ring so far in 86000 miles. I love it. Really don’t know what I’ll replace it with…I guess the last of the old V6 Roks are priced sky high now if these new ones are a bit ‘diluted’ 🤷‍♂️

New Defender on steel wheels for me, when this Amarok throws the towel in. Was hoping there’d be some 50k milers for sensible money by now for me to attempt to break, but still ridiculous money.
