you forgot to mention record farm debt levels in NZ, theyve swapped subs for debt, dairy exports to china were the savior for NZ farming but now the chinese are milking their own
Interesting comment...so you believe that businesses should be subsidised by the taxpayer rather than stand on its own feet. Most successful businesses will always use debt to move forwards. Yup China was and still is a major customer of NZ dairy, but they will not be self sustainable in my lifetime for sure, so continue to be the largest buyers. Additionally, the smart dairy companies are also making inroads into India, Malaysia and the Middle East.. record debt levels are a mark of the current global problems, leading to increased inputs, but lets have a wager on who wins out at the end....subsidised British farmers or unsubsided players in the global market?

They’ll be no subs in England in 3 years they have pretty much halved now. We are well placed with a growing home market that we will enjoy trying to fulfil. Let’s see who wins, with your debt it’s like riding a three legged horse.

If imports from industrial scale producers or subsidised countries i.e beef from ireland should be allowed to flood in tariff free then yes of course we should also support our own farmers to create a level playing field, if we dont its clear what will happen, our government wants food as cheap as possible for the masses therefore it is wise to support them with subs(which are paid in tax by the wealthy) to ease the cost of living crisis for the poor, debt is the last thing you want when your gov is hiking interest rates every few months

The theory of 'a level playing field' is fine, but in practice I have yet to see it ever happen.

We are getting trussed up tighter than an oven-ready chicken for the cooker! 🍗
