New Weaving DD drill

This just popped on Facebook - anybody know anything about it?!

I had heard about this drill. Apparently it was going very well in heavy soils with the angled disc. Basically does what my crap paint drawings a while ago were attempting to sketch.

I was lucky enough to see this drill working a few weeks ago, drilling spring barley into some pretty wet and heavy clay. I was very impressed with the accurate seed placement and how well it closed the slot, crop is looking well.

I quite fancy one of those. Looks very heavy on the linkage, something like a mounted Mzuri for weight? I'm not that fussed about depth control right beside the disc now that fields are billiard table level. Angled discs should eliminate slot side wall compression but mustn't create soil throw instead.

I think the tractor pictured is 120hp which makes the drill look bigger than it is. Angling the discs certainly reduces the force needed to create a slot and allows the weight of the machine to close it. There was very little movement of the soil.

This is what I was thinking about soil through. I value in Indy depth control but would be good to see it in action

A mate of mine was approached by weaving to try it on black land as they were really happy how it performed on heavy soils, particularly with regard to slot closure. Sounds exactly what I need to overcome the problems we have faced. Look forward to seeing it in action

Weaving demoed it for me , into overwintered stubble, straw removed no cover crop,
It worked very well and very little disturbance, proper low disturbance, the conditions were perfect for direct drilling ,dry top and moist underneath, the oats are growing and are very even , will get some photos uploaded. From what i can gather , Weaving intend to have 3 - 4.8m mounted, and 4 - 8m trailed using their caddy system ,

The angle of the disc makes the difference, 18 degree to the vertical , knowing who helped design it with Weaving, it makes sense, he sold a JD 750a because it disturbed too much soil.

I haven't bought one , i would like to see it working into chopped straw in the summer , and wetter conditions, in the autumn, as Elmstead used to say every action has an opposite reaction ,

[With the caveat that the drill choice is fine tuning and that the system (i.e. rotation, soil health, manager education etc.) are the primary influences of success.]

I spent a good 30 minutes or so talking to Edward Weaving this afternoon to understand the detail of the drill. I have to say I think this is a very promising design and I was very encouraged by what I heard. They would have come and demoed if it we hadn't finished. They will have a trailed 6m demo operating for the upcoming season.

I do think that this angled slot approach has to the potential to do what the CS does (or better if the soil disturbance is less) in terms of placing the seed into a conducive environment for a good start for a non-stratospheric price and without the need have huge tractors and expensive metal costs.

I look forward to seeing some pictures and see it in action. Certainly it is great to have so many (UK) manufacturers putting their brains and expertise into this area.
