Fair enough, but a lot of past content on BFF is lost, some of which was quite handy for reference, don't see why both forum's can't run.
I guess there would be too much dilution. Assuming BFF hasn't lost all its content, then it will probably still get used for reference.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for the old content, I get the impression it's lost and they are just going to start again asking everyone to reregister etc

I emailed Blue with an offer of help before I made this place live yesterday, I might be able to get the content back if he gave me the keys to try ! If I couldn't I certainly have friends that could (my best friend from school is a director of Symantec !)

Can't help if I'm not allowed though, I would make yourselves all comfortable here now

If it does restart I would also think long and hard about registering your details with anyone so careless with your information - this is not the first time BFF has been hacked or lost all its content and user details to hackers

All this was avoidable if they had only bothered to maintain the place and update security patches as they were released

It's amazing that someone running a forum such as BFF didn't take regular backups (vbulletin can do it automatically) and store them in a different location. If it was on a hosted server then the server company take backups of their data so if server failure was the issue they would reinstate the site with minimal post loss on the forum. I have in the past managed to get a hosting company to provide me with a backup for someone who didn't backup themselves.

it is possible to get most of the content back I think using web services like "get back" that take snap shots of websites

if there is either will or technical ability to do so however is another matter !

if they don't - I might just do it instead ! It's criminal to loose all that content for reference

Maybe people can start copying important threads across?

I'm not sure about that, firstly if/when the site is back up and the position with regard to archived posts will be clearer, and I'm not sure there aren't copyright issues with 'laying claim' to whole threads.
In any case the wayback machine will keep it for many years.
I was surprised how you can click down through most if not all threads.

I thought the same about copyright...

I presume there was something in the T&C's to say the forum owner had copyright over a members posts?

Although then the argument for being personally responsible for your own posts would not be just?

I'd rather just move on. All the brains are on here anyway. Post anew.
I think we should start afresh as there are a lot of new people on here who couldn't get on BFF so will be able to add their experience to questions which otherwise wouldn't be given if people just search through the archives.

I'm not 100% sure but I think ownership of content is the posters not the forum

as you say if the forum owns the content they are responsible for it and and liable etc that may come from it

The recent Twiter case proved that it is the individuals that are responsible for their actions and not a 3rd party publisher

I think the issue is more that individual posters wrote on the original site and should not be assumed they agree to everything being used with no proper attribution on another site.
There is no need to directly copy things over.

i don't think it matters - this place will grow fast now and the information will soon grow

it's safe here - we are backed up automatically every hour, we will never loose the content I promise
