Iv been having a chat with the nfu vice president at the Yorkshire show and got round to asking why the nfu are not pointing out to the public and government when they appear in the media that food prices need to go up to pay for rising production cost. They made aware to me that the NFU are not allowed to discuss prices or say the price of food should go up as this would contravene competition and marketing law🤷‍♂️🙈🤷‍♂️🙈

But they're allowed to say that we should keep food prices low?

I've plenty of times heard them say food prices should come down , so they obviously do talk about prices.... just in the wrong direction.

I can't think there's anything illegal about making general comments that food prices should be sufficient to make farm businesses viable.

So why can they put a RT sticker on food then. Surely that contravenes competition and marketing laws !!?

Lets be honest, the government want........actually need........ cheap food, Not sure the NFU are going to disagree with that.

I just don't understand why the food buying public can't be informed that the bread they are buying today was produced from last years wheat which was grown with inputs that hit record costs. So just because todays fert, spray and diesel prices have dropped back a bit doesn't mean that food prices are going to go back to what they were. I keep quoting Prof Tim Lang who I heard say 10 years ago that because of improvements in tech etc, the real price of food has reduced constantly for the last 135 (now 145) years and it has to hit the bottom soon and start rising. Ladies and Gents, we at that point.

NFU have ignored competition law breaches in uk ag for decades …… why ? …….. follow the money !

the single biggest thing that would change the fortunes of uk farmers would be PROPER representation and lobbying on these supply chain issues both input and output

………… but ! …….. follow the money / jobs

DEFRA finally have the NFU’s number imo now …….. about time as well
I’m in no way defending the Nfu here, but defra want divide and conquer when it comes to farmers.
I think this is borne out by SFI, which only suits certain types of farmers and doesn’t suit others.
Nfu clearly didn’t improve that either
