Families staying at home this Christmas are being encouraged to buy the same size British turkey as normal and maximise the fantastic value British turkey offers all the way through the festive period, not just on Christmas Day.

With millions of people expected to stay at home, the nation’s festive meat of choice has plenty of opportunities to shine far beyond December 25.

Whether it’s the traditional leftover turkey sandwich, or even a pie or pasta bake, there are plenty of ways to ensure all of the delicious and nutritious meat gets used up.

‘Turkey is such a versatile meat’

NFU turkey group chairman Michael Bailey said:

“Turkey producers have been adapting their businesses and working hard to ensure there are enough turkeys for everyone.

Turkey is such a versatile meat. Once you’ve enjoyed the main Christmas Day meal, you’ll have plenty of turkey leftovers to make a range of healthy, tasty meals for you and your family, making sure all the fantastic meat is put to good use.

“Remember, buying a British turkey directly from the farm where it has been produced not only benefits a local farming business but provides you with a great tasting, high-welfare bird reared to the highest standards.

If you’re ordering from your local butcher, then don’t be afraid to ask where the bird has been sourced from.

“If you’re going to the supermarket then look carefully for the Red Tractor logo, which also provides a guarantee of traceability, environmental protection, food safety and hygiene and welfare standards,” he concluded.
