So my silage fields were given 90 units of nitrogen can based on the 12th of may. 40 days ago. The way the grass has grown and the forecast I am thinking about doing one field for haylage next week. Although worried about nitrogen in the grass? Any thoughts? Thanks

General rule of thumb is 2 units/day.So 45 days from an 90 unit application .Next week should be fine.

Depends on your weather. Put fert on some grazing that was getting away from us 14th may and it's not done anything. Guess the rain earlier this week will have washed it in.

Is testing accurate ? How many samples would you need to take to be sure?

You make a composite sample and send of one sample per field. I used to get a pair of shears or just pull handfuls of grass up at 6-10 locations in each field, mix them and send it off, results back by email within 48 hours. It's only as accurate as your sample, but it's more reliable than counting units per day.

Cheers. Got held up with fert after 1st cut, not long on and the grass is flying. Don't know what I'll do cut it and hope for the best or wait and still have had silage......

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
