No till coulters on a combine header?

No hair pinning

Plenty of horsepower

Room for seed (cover or cash)

Auto contour

Can it be done?!

That's brilliant, why hadn't we though of that before.

Autocast with a far higher success rate. Still got the problem of allelopathy from chopped straw though, best job would be disc counters under the stripper header, or bale.

I think it has been done in the past by a German company...possibly Guttler or one of the other small seeder manufacturers. They had a row of Accord disc coulters mounted on the back of Claas header. I had a photo of the set-up but I can't just find it at the moment..
But a good idea.

I think the compaction from 30 tonne of combine running over it and not forgetting the 50 tonne chaser bin and tractor, now that could be a problem !!!

Compaction wouldnt be any different then DD after a combine surely? If anything would be better drilling infront of combine wheels wouldnt it?!

Then pull this out the back crushing all the unwanted losses and grass seeds ect.

Less compaction that dd with a tractor after the combine, as said no hair pinning or trash issues so coulter could be quite a simple affair

It's a good idea but the more you think about it the more complex it gets - you need a method of keeping the coulter depth constant regardless of header height

O.K., but I think it`s simply too complex to get all these jobs done in one go. To get the optimum out of each job, you have to do it in single passes.
The old Happy Seeder is doing primarily what the combine does with the straw: pick up all residues with a flail mower in front, place the seed in the middle and blow back the residue on the back:

If you want to do some engineering, an interesting job would be to mount a flail mower in the front linkage, have a rotavator-seeder in the back like this to place the seed in fine seedbed and hoe out all weeds:
Howard Samavator GS franz..jpg

And then blow the flailed residue through some tubes back on the rotavated surface.

So...residue on top, fine earth covering the seed, seed lying on unmoved and moist ground, all weeds killed chemical-free......what else do we want ?

The best way to get a lot of weeds for free is to use a rotavator, for every weed they kill another 100 will grow behind a rotavator.....blackgrass heaven !!!

Errr what exactly are you planning to drill in July?

Cover crops
Osr after ww in August
Ww after beans
Ww after linseed
Ww after soya
Ww after millet
Ww after lupins

Would suit my rotation well ! Would only use a drill for ww after oats and peas in the autumn plus spring crops

Would slow harvest though I guess

I cannot think with modern sensors and hydraulics it is impossible.

Have you accidentally lifted/lowered the 750 from being square whilst drilling.....it is quite forgiving depth wise

O.K., I know what you mean.
But from my gut feeling coupled with a few observations on my own, I am pretty sure that the germination of weeds is more related to soil-microbiology than to the way soil particles are moved or not at all. Especially for blackgrass.
Allelopathy is pure microbiology too.
Moving soil or not moving soil changes microbiology too.

I've asked this question before, but more relavent here. Why mount coulters on a header when you can autocast OSR after wheat.
Is a crop of OSR established by a disc dril which placed the seed 1/2" underground going to yield any more than a crop established with the seed grown on the ground???

My experience of watching both methods locally would say that a crop established with a coulter is more reliable than one autocast.
