I realise most of you men are probably on borehole supply. However could anyone on NI water mains give me a steer on normal water bills per head. Over £700 here for the last 6 months, average cattle numbers of about 320, varying ages. Probably need to look at alternatives.

Are you dairy?

It's very low if you're dairy. Ours is higher even with a poor borehole & rainwater collection. Cost & success of a borehole varies massively according to the geology of your area, round here rock is hard and dry so it's expensive and uncertain. In other areas the drillers will work on a no water no fee basis I'm told.

I should have said they are beef cattle. Maybe it isn’t too bad then. Was just considering the possibility that we had a leak but probably not then!
@jay , out of interest what do you use the rainwater for? Wash down or drinking or everything?

Just wash down, even with filtering and uv treatment I'd be worried about using it for drinking.

Has anyone noticed a spike in SCC’s? I’m struggling with individual cows this past fortnight. 5cows that where cruising along in the 100’s now all millionaires. I’ve also got 3 new cases of cows with dermatitis on the udder, towards the from in the cleft. I had a issue with it before but managed to clear it up fairly sharp before. Foot bath 6 days a week and in terms of dermatitis on cows feet I’d be running at a very low percentage. Any advice on where they’re picking it up Or how to prevent it on the udder? It’s knocks a cow for six if it gets a grip on her.

Yes. I opened the door and they broke out to the field where I opened the gate. Eating grass..pure madness.
You mean without ensiling or zero grazing the grass cows will actually go out to the fields and eat it. I am astounded. Sounds like the way to go. I remember seeing that in old photos years back. Must be great for the cow to feel the sunshine and all that fresh air. Just fantastic William
