We have had nothing at all, our growth on the grazing fields is down to 30kg DM per hectare it was at 110 three weeks ago when it last rained. I've cows back in at night for two weeks now, I recon if it doesn't rain this week they will have to be back in full time

The grass growth graph for the year to date (about a week ago) was showing growth well behind average then a huge peak away above average and the prediction was that it would fall rapidly to considerably below average again.

So far it seems it was pretty much spot on.

Yeah no rain here either 2nd cut in tho so plenty of ground for youngstock and dry cows to run over, enough grass for grazing for the week and that’s it it’ll be inside on silage again

No rain, not expecting any really, bbc has been quite accurate lately, low percentages for rain although you would expect a thunderplump with the humidity now. My grazing is all but finished so I I’ll graze/zero graze my second cut in the meantime. Not as if it’s doing anything now.

We are in the very fortunate position of having 5 of our 7 pits full now, have just opened the last of last years 1st cut I imagine if this weather keeps up won’t be long going through it, have another pit of last years 2nd cut there as well so plenty of silage in reserve

Cut 3 weeks ago and chanced fert out on Friday. Was wondering whether to go before or after the predicted thunderstorms at weekend. Needn't have worried. Looks like another warm dry week

I could hear rain on the roof at about midnight, it lasted 1 minute.
You wouldn't have thought there was anything this morning, dust blowing as usual.
Never seen ground drying as quickly before this early. We had to get the contractor to pipe the slurry on the second cut a month ago and last week you'd break a tractor in two mowing the same ground.

Would you not just have a sacrifice field for the cows to go out and lie in and even feed silage in the field New Zealand style

I put a bag on some ground in the hope of some damp. Never mind. It's CAN, so it's not going anywhere unless it gets a torrent. Think I'll carry on tomorrow and cover the farm anyway. Have some really watery slurry in a store to go on top of it.

We did second cut at the start of the month so nothing really on the silage fields yet, they have greened but no real cover of grass. Still going into covers of around 2500 and grazing to about 1700 so still getting something during the day

Where I live,in a drought we never get rain.Something to do with the Mourne mountains.Grass has stopped.
Basic geography (or used to be!).
Leeward and Windward.png

Also why the east coast of Scotland is one of the driest parts of the UK despite being more northerly.

Would protected urea be OK to use in the same way as CAN in the hope of getting a heavy drab or two. Missed what was given and looking like little chance or rain the next 10 days.

No drab here at all the last few mornings, still plenty of grass in front of cows and youngstock. 1st cut in over 2 weeks ago and can still see the stubble. Been going over it with thin slurry from the store, don't think there's any point sowing fertiliser at the minute. 2nd cut won't be hard to lift if it doesn't get a slap of rain.
Never like looking for rain but a wet night and a few cooler days would be welcome. Summer holidays aren't far away so there's hope yet.
