Not Quite Farm Engineering or a Quick Bodge.

Did one last year, lot of work in it but if it's your own labour not so bad, but probably cheaper to buy a trailer with one on it tbh. If you do make one flowfit are decent for Rams and make sure you keep the pivot right up high on top rail to keep geometry right after that it is common sense really

I ve been offered a redrock locally, to get a trailer up here could be £400+ in haulage. Could save the transport and put that towards converting the back door. A neighbour got a kit from redrock to convert his to hydraulic but redrock dont make this model of trailer anymore!
Is it the more vertical the rams the further it ll open? I want it to open right up level to clear a load of muck

Depends entirely on mounting points and length of Rams as to how far it will open, no right or wrong really just look at other trailers and do similiar.

The longer the arm the higher it will clear the load. Surely Redrock would let you have some drawings or at least some pics? Worth asking. Make sure you fit some double pilot check valves so you don't get creep on the rams, ideally they would be mounted directly on the ram.

Any pics of the trailer @Dave6170 ? I made a tailgate hydraulic on one of our machines, a Dumptruck, the tailgate lifts very high to clear the load, essential on a Dumptruck. I can post a pic if you like, give you some ideas maybe? But it's a bit of a different application so may not be relevant?

Looking at redrock trailer pics, the new ones have a very neat design, a similar idea to how I did our dumper.
Here's a few pics I found....
I'm guessing this is a newer model than you have? No reason you couldn't use this tailgate design though?

gets the tailgate well above the load

assuming this is similar to you trailer?

As said, the further forward the pivot point, the wider it will open with the same cylinder.
Never used them for grain, but our Gull ones are perfect for muck.

Our 1987 Bailey has been brilliant. I wouldn't buy another typing trailer without a hydraulic tailgate. Ours has a check valve and an isolator valve worked by lifting the body.

Having said that I really like the design of the Stewart trailers hydraulic rear door where the first few inches of ram travel lifts the whole door vertically and, inn so doing, lifts the door out of retaining hooks. After that it pivots.

built a hydraulic door last year built the frame out of thrown away angle from transporting turbines
20160620_152506.jpg

got the lower ram mount wrong as you can see in this picture
20160618_140433.jpg
quick shift of the lower mount and the door opens fully
20160620_194702.jpg

for best door seal slot the top door mount so that when you open the door it slides out first then up weld 2 latches to the lower part of the door and when you lower and shut the door it will pull in and seal got mine a little too good and found out it is now totally water tight

the only thing i had to buy was the hydraulic pipe and fittings everything else was recycled from the turbine site the angle was supports for the sections while transported and all the must have lifted 100kg of nuts and bolts of all sizes that thanks to HSE they are only allowed to use once
