Not so high health heifers

I don't like the commonly banded around term HI HEALTH HERD as it covers a multitude of sins, and without details means nothing. However membership of a scheme it is more verification than basic word of mouth.

Some health schemes have a database of members and their status.

If the person sells cattle at pedigree sales their health status is often printed in the catalogue. If this were the case, past sales catalogue would be a link.

I don't think they will be johnes... I can prove they are being advertised at level 1 now, I can prove he sold some other cattle at level 1, and I think if I speak with the society I they will have info on how the heifers were advertised when I bought them!
I just want to know if I stand a chance of getting some compensation for the heifers if he does turn out to be level 1
Don't relay on what all societies say, there have been a couple of scandals lately where Societies weren't fully aware of some member's status.

Why would it be egg on face? I was lead to believe that that he was level 1?
I could test them and they be clear but break down in a few years? What happens then?
To be honest I was pulling your chain with my earlier post it is this compensation culture that I do not like anything wrong now every body is scrambling for compensation. The guy has taught you a very good life lesson, you will be a lot more careful who you buy off in the future. Take it on the chin and move on.

Johnes testing is a nightmare, particularly in a herd which buys in stock. The health schemes do not tend to test animals under 2 years anyway.
The other diseases especially BVD are much more of a concern. Why can you not just talk to the guy and explain your concerns?

Is that the way you do business? Why take it On the chin he has lied to me and others who he is sellibg stock too!

So are these heifers high value breeding stock.IE,cost thousands, purchased to breed Bulls to sell at society breed sales & improve your herd in general OR is it just that they happen to be pedigree & you"re using them as bit better suckler cows?(this would affect the value of any claim) I have assumed they are Beef?

I didn't do much of it at school, but when it comes to dealing with others it's all about homework.

A group of breeding heifers can be 10+ year investment, (longer if you close a herd) potentially costing tens of thousands. Like any multi thousand long term investment I would like to know all that I can about it.

Personally I think you cannot know enough about those that you source stock from, and I would be apt to buy from a known source if possible.

Anybody for publishing herd numbers where these problems come from?
I think this would be the way forwards - to have a publicly viewable record of health status for all herds. I'd like to see BVD, lepto, IBR, Johne's, TB and neospora. Wouldn't have to be very costly and would be an excellent tool for sales and purchases, but also allow local pressure to be put on the repeat offenders.

Don't group TB from a source we are forbidden to touch and have no control over, with cattle disease s which we do.

If I did business like that I would have been out of business a long time ago. If you feel so strongly about it come out and name the breeder responsible don't waste your money on solicitors because going down that road there is only one winner and that is the solicitors. One thing I have learnt over the years is that litigation is the road to nowhere and it is usually better to pocket your pride and learn from your mistakes it might not feel like it at the time but when you look back on it it is usually the sensible decision.

I get your point, but some buyers still like to know the status of the herd they are buying from, regardless of who's control the disease is under.
Bad enough being a government enforced leper let alone being a publicly shamed government enforced leper

No problem with anyone asking. :) But the answer is today's answer only, where infected wildlife have the right to roam.
PreMT is not the best way of checking a single animal's current status. (Skin test is an excellent HERD test, and is not being used correctly as a preMT. It also has a latency of reaction of up to 50 days)
Scotland's post movement test at 8 weeks after the move is more sensible.

They can already check bTB status in England and Wales

And watch the spread north and east. Clusters generally indicate a common source, not a moved bovine.
