Nroso - a joke

I spent a evening with the lovely lady that runs NROSO last week - I mentioned this thread and that many felt the courses were a waste of time / money

They want them to be useful and good so she clearly was not happy to hear the feedback but pointed out unless people let them know they don't know there is a problem !

So best thing you can all do if you go on a course and feel it was a rip off or you learnt nothing is call or email NROSO and let them know, That way they can do sometime positive about it and make changes

tell her to close it down and get a proper job

Out of interest, how many other meetings through out the year would it take to go to, in order to get the required number of Nroso points?

If you really don't like the 10 point workshops, surely it wouldn't be too difficult to get the points by other means?

You certainly wouldn't get 10 points at any one meeting.

I've never needed to do these one day wonder courses. I think operators would gain more knowledge from a spread of meetings than one day but for those who aren't too bothered these ones are ticking the right boxes.

The agronomy meetings I go to for all sorts of topics do the NRoSO requirements many times over. Never had any trouble meeting the 50 BASIS points each year either.

Is it just me or does anyone else frequently learn more from other people than from the person doing the talking at the front of the room?

i'd like to know 1/ who are they?
2/ who decides what they want to achieve?
3/ who do they share the 'database' with?
4/ have they any evidence that ....for eg...pesticides in water has dropped since 2003

so really all the boring 'transparency' stuff that is supposed to fill public life but they don't want to know about?

One in Wiltshire at the beginning of the month.
I enjoy them. Bit of food, few coffees, bit of a chat. Makes a change from usual January morning at work.
I learnt at lot from them and been reminded of things that I perhaps have let slip over time.
Just seems a shame that they have a captive audience, who are there to get their 10 points, seems a great opportunity to really educate and re-educate spray operators and farmers. Knapsack maintenance and calibration is just such a waste of an opportunity.
The NRoSO update course is run for the operatives, they are asked at the end of every years course what should be on the agenda for the following year, or at least what would they like to learn more about in 12 months time. Is it NRoSOs fault if the subject is not spot on. And come on if for most farming units you can keep upto date with NRoSO points by attending 1 meeting per year is that such a bad thing?

i agree that 1 meeting a year is easy....in fact it's to easy IMO.....as for asking what operatives want in the course:rolleyes:....whats the point in that:scratchhead:

surely noroso is there to educate us to reduce pollution and avoid 1/ pesticide tax ( mission accomplished so far) 2/stop loosing chemicals (fail)

we're loosing chemicals because whatever we do chemicals are going to leach into the environment and no amount of 'training',biscuit eating, sprayer mot'ing is going to stop it......everybody knows it ...it's an elephant in the room

the straight choice is do they want food or water that adhers to a ridiculous spec?.....essex water chap told me that even at 5ppb pesticide you'd have to drink an olympic sized swimming pool of water/day for about 40 years to get enough pesticide to hurt you

i've become so disilusioned with it i'm chucking in my noroso membership.cos it's a lot of hypocritical crap

Dad was cleaning out the filing cabinet this morning and I had a look at 30 years worth of "clean water initiatives", inspectors reports, NVZ info, handouts from meetings all that jazz beloved of consultants and the paperwork and meetings industry.

And what's changed after 30 years of hot air and reams and reams of booklets and handouts? Well, we've lost quite a few chemicals, and now we have to jump through a lot more bureaucratic and "training" hoops but other than that it's been much ado about nothing. We are doing what we always did, being as careful as we can be, and using common sense.

30 years of zero progress. No increase in yields, no more or less chemicals in the water, no let up on the threats to withdraw actives, no change in NVZ info, but just different ways of recording, monitoring and looking at it.
