NUM3 - Legume Fallow, now rotational

Latest SFI update has now given option for NUM3 Legume Fallow to be rotational.

See screenshot of the guidance.

Non-rotated we have to establish within 13 months of agreement start date, so say we start agreement 1st Sept 2023, then we'd need to establish by 31st Aug '24, then leave it there for two summers.

What if we're intending to rotate it?

Have we still got 12 months to establish it? So establish by end of August 2024? Then if we rotate it, at end of summer 2024 we can plant that field with wheat, and establish the legumes in a different field (summer 2025, leaving it there until end of summer 2026)?

OR, if we choose to rotate it, are we expected to establish it end of summer 2023???

That up to then it doesn't have to be fallow?
I think it means we can do some of the prohibited activities up to that point. e.g. use herbicides.

Of using it rotationally though, i.e. only leaving it for a single season, then rotating it to different field.... Then there won't be a "second spring after sowing".

I think they've updated the option to say it can be rotational, but have still got the old wording for when it was supposed to stay in same field for 2 years.

Sounds like it needs a
NUM3 non-rotational and
NUM3.1 rotational prescription.

Flexibility can and does add confusion

why would anyone choose this over AHL2 at £732 though ? you can still put legumes in that if you choose
Depends if you want to follow with a spring or winter sown crop?

We've got some AB9 (AHL2 Winter Bird Food equivalent) on light land, which we'll follow with a spring crop.

Legume fallow on slightly heavier ground which we'll follow with W. Wheat. Single year L F. in SFI is looking like a possibility. Beans, glyphosate post drilling, then throw some clover seed on, leave until August 15th, burn off, harvest????? Needs more thought.

All up in the air what we choose to do in coming years. Anything but o.s.r. (too risky).

Vining peas possibly. Maize growers are coming to realization they've to match stewardship rates or they won't get any land.

i’m intending to follow AHL2 with winter wheat - am i missing something that prevents that ? it’s my OSR replacement from next harvest onwards

AHL2 Winter Bird Food, should provide bird food/seeds from late autumn to late winter. The CS equivalent is AB9, which stipulates the option remains in place until mid February, so although AHL2 doesn't stipulate an actual date, presumably we'd be looking at a similar sort of date?

While "late winter" isn't defined in the AHL2 standard, it is defined else where in the "handbook" as copied and pasted below...

These timings will usually mean:
    • September, October and November for the autumn
    • December, January and February for the winter
    • January and February for late winter

July planted seed could do that no problem

could broadcast to standing crop even earlier if required i guess
