We’re excited to introduce our GGP Ovine 50K DNA test for the New Zealand sheep breeders. Our aim is to make it as cost-effective and simple as possible with no ‘add ons’ and extra costs. Just one test with everything you’d want included at 1/6 of the price of other 50k tests on the market ($29 instead of $200). So my question is… what traits are important to you? So far we are looking at reporting on the following traits:

  • Parentage
  • Yellow fat gene test
  • Fecundity gene test
  • Booroola gene test
  • Loin muscle gene test
  • Meat and fat yield gene test
  • Increased number of lambs born gene test
  • Microphthalmia gene test

We can also include reports on other traits like Spider Lamb Syndrome and Dermatosparaxis, depending on demand. Are these important to you? If there are any other traits that would appeal to you comment below and we will check if they are covered by our GGP Ovine 50k.

Would this be something you’d consider purchasing?

Which laboratory services this array of tests?
What is the time lapse between receiving the sample and the report?
Are the reports compatible with the gBVs calculations in Signet, SIL and Sheep Ireland?

Neogen is the lab.
The turnaround time is about 4 weeks from receiving the sample.
Yes, they are compatible with those in SIL. I will have to look into Signet and Sheep Ireland and get back to you.

Other useful traits to measure would be:

Longevity
Teeth retention
Character
Style
Thriftiness
Docility
Rain-shedding ability
Domesticity
Bonny heed
Lambing ease and mothering instinct
.............

Don't hold your breath for too many on that list as most are largely influenced by the environment which includes the human preference for the fashion of the day.
Docility/domesticity is a candidate.
Mothering instinct is largely dependent upon speed of lambing (pelvic aperture contributes 60% and sire of the lamb......lamb shape and birth weight most of the rest). Farmers have already proven the wedge shape to be the largest driver of lambing ease. So why buy that test? BVs for Survival already exist.
Thriftiness usually involves internal parasites.....plenty of research already vindicating BVs for Resistance to Worms.

Thank you
I have been in touch with Signet and they informed me that they are not presently producing genomic EBVs. Through their central progeny test they are storing high-density genotypes, using Neogen in Ayr – and some low-density ones too, checking some parentage. However, they are not doing any evaluation work with them.
About 18 months ago the Texel Sheep Society decided to split from Signet and do their own thing, which included the development of genomic breeding values for certain health traits (lameness and mastitis) – though at present they continue to get their main EBVs for growth, carcase (incl. CT) and maternal traits through the same mixed breed evaluation as Signet – so these are not genomic either.
I got in touch with the Texel Sheep Society and they use the same Neogen SNP chip so this will be compatible.
Sheep Ireland is still yet to get back to me sorry.

Hope this is helpful
Cheers

Cheers for that update. Sheep Ireland have an extensive genomic programme in action, but wondering if it all only goes through their designated system.
I welcome the competition and the addition of another common tool for the international linking of the sheep breeding industry.

No worries. Oh right! Well, I'll keep you posted if I get a reply from them.
Thank you, I appreciate your reply.

Cheers. What price do you intend to roll out other tests at? 5k? Parentage only? Parentage plus major genes?
We just have the one 50k test at $29 which includes everything stated above. Our aim was to make it as simple and cost-effective as possible for farmers so they can get everything they'd want to be included in one test.
As well as this, lower marker tests are starting to be phased out. Therefore, having only the 50k test will future proof our clients.

For those of us who do not have sheep linked to the reference population or those who just want to do DNA parentage and/or single gene tests then this $29 option will be your only product?
