NZ Groundswell protests.

My NZ wife’s cousin’s lambing skills in the 70’s began and ended with shooting those ewes which were any bother, when things got tougher in the 80’s he used to carry a sharp knife instead of wasting a bullet - In this century his son just lets the ewe die.
Wouldn’t be acceptable in the UK.
Tail docking of dairy cows (to benefit the milker in a parlour) was I believe banned within the last 10 years so progress is being made.
Tail docking of dairy cows was for the benefit of the cow as much as the milker, I have lived here for 22 years and it has not been carried out in that time.
Are you saying it is not acceptable for sheep to die? If so you have some different sheep than anywhere else in the world.
Interesting comment about using a knife to save a bullet, much of this is down to perception and a different outlook, friend of mine (Kiwi) was working in on a sheep farm in Sweden, there was a fire in the sheep barn with many ewes badly burnt, Swedish farmer rang the vet to put those sheep out of their misery, sat back and waited for said vet, Kiwi thought the wait was cruel and started to dispatch the sheep with a knife, Swedish farmer thought this was cruel as his opinion was they should wait for the vet to euthanise. Who was correct?

These protests are anti-government, not anti buyer - Maybe they are not really sure who they are protesting against o_O

Could be 10 or 12 years ago but they certainly haven't increased their labour input in that time, except for maybe a bit more wielding of a biro ;)
They are protesting against the unworkable regulations now being put in place by a communist government. It is not just farmers protesting, look at the Ute tax, ridiculous and badly thought out, no electric utes available and if there were how are you going to generate the power to charge them? Importing Indonesian coal?

Alexandra had over 1000 attend the protest with streets lined with urban supporters. Reports from other regional towns in the deep south were similar to the many thousands attending in Gore.
Given that there are 12,500 farmers in each dairy and sheep/beef industries across NZ with incomes largely derived from agriculture plus arable farmers and horticulturalists in specific regions, to achieve around an average of 1000 people present in each of the 50 odd locations suggests the turnout of farmers must have represented a high majority from the primary industries.
In my home region where large high country sheep stations predominate, the turnout was incredible.

It will be interesting to watch the Government's reaction/response given the 16th August timeline for further action. Urban support for farmers is a threat to their popularity which is due to their covid response. However their arrogance may continue while the PM bathes in her glory from hosting APEC with Biden, Putin and Xi Li Ping online agreeing to support vaccination programmes in poor countries.

So what and how much is this Ute Tax, is it more than on a plumbers van or a tow truck, just wanting to understand ?

From Jan 1 2022 Ford Ranger $1,090 - 4,660, Toyota Hilux $1,730 - 3,280, Isuzu D-Max $2,530 - 2,990, Nissan Navara $220 - 3,050.
Range in taxes depends on fuel type, motor size and weight of option chosen.
For most farmers a larger engine with more torque for pulling trailer/heavy loads is obvious. Models with heavier suspension to handle farm tracks around hills the most sought after. Not lighter weight petrol sport options with flash paint work.
Tradies also prefer similar.

That’s hefty, is that retrospective .?

Virtuall everyone now accepts that Climate Change in a thing now and most also accept that vehicles are a part of the problem but imposing that level of extra tax burden needs to come with an alternative.

"Act leader David Seymour also said the 'feebate' scheme amounted to "taxing the tradies to subsidise Teslas."

Under the scheme, somebody buying a $75,000 Tesla Model 3 EV would get a $8625 discount – although the higher-end Tesla and electric cars which cost more than $80,000 do not qualify for it.

A farmer buying a Toyota Hilux would be stung with a $2,900 fee."

Seymour said it amounted to a new tax on tradies, farmers and others who needed bigger vehicles for which there were limited or no electric vehicle options. He said that would include those with large families.

"The social justice wing of the Green Party should ask why the party is prepared to tax people who drive cheap, reliable cars, just so the well-off environmental wing can buy a Tesla."

He said drivers of petrol cars already effectively subsidised electric car drivers through petrol taxes, the emissions trading system tax, and road user charges."

It wad the brainchild of a very noisy urban Green party MP in the last government (whose name escapes me now) and totally plays the urban commuters against the rest of the country.

Not retrospective, but commences this New Year.
Currently there is no electric alternative in the development pipeline for the uses NZ farmers and tradies put on 'utes.

Good old Green Party policy….. and they wonder why they are only considered as the lunatic fringe by most sane individuals. :banghead:

They actually have some sensible policies, but then alienate most ‘normal’ folk by going off into wibble territory like this.
Let’s just hope they never get brought in as a coalition party to form a UK government with our minority parties.😲

Road tax is the fee that users of diesel have to buy in advance if the diesel vehicle is used on the roads. Petrol has the tax built into the retail price. It is rated on weight of vehicle.
NZ does not have red diesel.
If a vehicle is used both on and off road, then a log book has to be kept to claim a fuel rebate.

You can have the vehicle GPSd so that off road use is rebated.
