Interesting point.

Is there any truth in the persistent rumour that Dalguise requires more vernalisation than Mascani?

Don't suppose there's any data anywhere yet available at all on Southwark or Eagle?
I cant really say my experience with winter oats is limited to a variety called Aintree that we grew nearly 30 years ago . High yield of poor quality oats that were a hard sell . A few bags of leftover seed were drilled the following spring and seemed to head in seperate stages and we eventually ended up in the silage pit.
Its all spring varities that are drilled over here even in autumn the tend to produce better quality grain. A variety called Barra was the mainstay variety for over 30 years due to its unsurpassed kph im not sure if it is still on the rec list it was up to a couple of years ago .
Downside of drilling spring varities is a bad frost at the wrong time can wipe out a crop and leave you redrilling in spring .
The amount of spring genes in a true winter oat wil really determine the success or failure of spring drilling probably be ok in march or early april any later i wouldnt bother. But every year is different so who knows .

Drilled mascarni last April on sand dire bushel weight and yield (5.5tph )apart from the the last field where I was running out of seed so halved to seed rate to 80kg/ha did 2T/ha more (7.5tph) and and tremendous bushel weight just a shame that field was only 1ha
watch out for crown rust combine was brown by the end of the day
